Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Nassau, Bahamas – The Bradley men's basketball team won its second-straight game at the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase on Sunday afternoon, posting a 70-64 victory against Weber State. The Braves, who won two neutral-site games at an in-season tournament for the first time since 2002, improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Wildcats drop to 3-2.

Sophomore Darrell Brown led the Braves from the opening whistle and finished with a season-best total of 23 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. In addition to finishing 7-of-14 from the floor, the guard made all three of his 3-pointers, while also adding six free throws.

Freshman Elijah Childs added 10 points and seven rebounds, while senior Donte Thomas chipped in eight points and a game-high eight rebounds as Bradley dominated the glass in the winning effort.

The Braves put together their best first half of the season to head into the locker room with a 12-point advantage, thanks to a late surge. After neither team led by more than a single possession for nearly the first 16 minutes of the opening stanza, Bradley finished the half on a 10-0 run during the final 2:27 to earn a 38-26 lead. The Braves made their final four shots of the period and aided by a 3-pointer from Brown and classmate Jayden Hodgson, Bradley's late run resulted in the team's highest first-half point total of the year and the team's largest edge at the break.

Brown finished with 14 first-half points overall as Bradley shot 52.0 percent in the opening 20 minutes of action, holding the Wildcats to just 35.7 percent.

The second half was a period of runs as the teams traded blows back-and-forth. The Wildcats began by cutting the BU lead down to just one thanks to an 8-0 stretch. The Braves, however, responded by scoring eight-straight points on their next five possession to go back up by nine, 55-46.

Weber State then regrouped and while trailing 57-49, rattled off another eight-point run to square the contest at 57 with just 4:28 left in regulation. On Bradley' next possession, however, senior JoJo McGlaston hit a mid-range jumper and the Braves never relinquished the lead after that. Brown then nailed a 3-pointer with 3:04 remaining before adding a layup as the Braves stretched their lead to seven, 64-57.

The Braves, who made 90 percent of their free throws in the second half, then calmly iced the game at the line to secure the six-point victory.

Bradley used a strong effort on the glass and aggressive play drawing fouls to earn the victory. The Braves held a 40-24 rebounding advantage, including 14-6 on the offensive glass, while going 18-for-23 at the charity stripe, compared to just 3-for-8 from the Wildcats.

Jerrick Harding led all scorers in the game with 26 points as Weber State shot 46.3 percent from the field (44.0 percent from 3-point range), while the Braves made 45.3 percent of their buckets (33.3 percent from beyond the arc).

While the Braves return home from The Bahamas, the Braves officially wrap up its Islands of the Bahamas Showcase schedule on Wednesday in Peoria against Missouri S&T. First tip at Carver Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: Brown has scored in double figures in all five games this season, matching the longest streak by a Brave to start a season in the last 10 years … The Braves have won the rebounding battle in each of the first five games of the season, matching the team's longest streak since an eight-game stretch during the 2005-06 season … Bradley also had its fifth-straight game to start the year allowing fewer than 70 points for the first time since the 1994-95 season … Bradley has not allowed a team to score more than 27 points in the first half this season … The Braves evened the series with Weber State at 1-1 … Bradley was playing without two regulars in the rotation in Koch Bar (passport issues) and Luuk van Bree (death in the family).
