Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
NORMAL, IL – The Bradley men's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start to the game as Illinois State prevailed in the I-74 Rivalry, 64-50, on Saturday night. The Braves are now 9-18 this season and 4-10 in Missouri Valley action, while the first-place Redbirds improve to 21-5 and 13-1 against MVC foes.

Junior JoJo McGlaston and freshman Jayden Hodgson each led Bradley with 11 points on the night with Hodgson scoring all 11 of his points in the second half. Junior Donte Thomas led BU with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

In a defensive battle to start the game, Illinois State was able to find some offense to grab a lead it would not relinquish. Despite holding the Redbirds to just 19 points in the first 14 minutes of the game, Bradley missed its first 14 field goals and ISU grabbed a 19-3 advantage with 5:34 remaining in the opening stanza. The Redbirds maintained that momentum into the halftime break for a 32-15 lead at the intermission.

Bradley played a much better second half, surpassing its first-half point total in just over eight minutes of action. The Braves pulled as close as 10 points late in the contest but ultimately, couldn't get any closer as the first-half deficit proved to be too much against the Redbirds. Time would run for the Braves' comeback attempt and ISU earned the 64-50 victory.

Bradley converted 33.3 percent of its chances in the game, with 42.4 percent mark and 5-of-10 3-point performance in the second half. Illinois State made 38.8 percent of its field goals and were led by Paris Lee, who finished with a game-high 14 points.

The Braves look to carry their second-half momentum into a midweek matchup at Northern Iowa. First tip on Wednesday is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: Bradley outscored an opponent in the second half for the first time since Jan. 14, ending a string of seven-straight games … Hodgson led the team in scoring for the first time in his career and also matched his personal-best with six rebounds … Hodgson went 2-for-3 from 3-point range and is now making 57.1 percent from beyond the arc in MVC play … The rookie made just 21.4 percent in non-conference action … The Braves held a 14-4 advantage in second-chance points thank to 10 offensive rebounds.
