Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
PEORIA, IL – Indiana State used a strong defensive effort to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit and defeat the Bradley men's basketball team, 56-54, on Wednesday night at Carver Arena. The loss drops the Braves to 9-17 on the season and 4-9 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Sycamores improve to 9-16 overall and 3-10 versus league foes.

Junior Donte Thomas led the Braves with 13 points and nine rebounds on the night. Freshman Darrell Brown added 11 points to go with a game-high four assists.

The Braves started the game very strong and maintained a double-digit lead for much of the first half. Brown and classmate Jayden Hodgson hit 3-pointers to start the game and Thomas followed with a layup for an early 8-0 advantage. After ISU finally found the scoreboard, the Braves added five more quick points for a 13-2 lead before the first media timeout.

The Bradley lead reached as many as 12 points, 27-15, before Indiana State scored 10-straight points for a two-point game. Unfazed though, the Braves promptly responded and finished the opening half on an 11-2 run – capped by a 3-pointer, steal and transition dunk by junior JoJo McGlaston – for a 38-27 edge at the break.

The Braves hit 45.2 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes and were able to turn 10 Indiana State turnovers into 15 points. The Sycamores, meanwhile, made 45.5 percent of their baskets but hit on just 3-of-13 from 3-point range.

Bradley was unable to carry any momentum into the second half. Indiana State erased its double-digit deficit in just under four minutes and eventually took its first lead of the contest, 41-39, thanks to a 14-1 run to start the period. From there, neither team would have more than a 3-point edge as the game featured four additional lead changes and five ties.

Bradley held a three-point advantage, 54-51, with just under two minutes remaining in regulation but Indiana State's Matt Van Scyoc nailed a 3-pointer to tie the contest. Brown missed a 3-pointer on the offensive end for BU and Emondre Rickman then added a jumper in the paint with 27.9 seconds left. Bradley had two shots in the final 10 seconds of the game but neither made it through the hoop as ISU held on for the 56-54 victory.

The Braves finished the game shooting 30.9 percent, making just 3-of-24 field goals in the second half. The Sycamores shot 45.2 percent for the game but also added 22 turnovers. Van Scyoc led all players with 19 points in the victory.

Bradley is back in action on Saturday night, squaring off at I-74 rival Illinois State. First tip is scheduled for 9 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPNU.

Game Notes: Thomas has now scored in double figures in six of the last nine games after not doing so in any of the first 17 contests … The 30.9 percent shooting is the lowest for Bradley this season, while the 22 turnovers forced are the most since Illinois Springfield had 24 miscues in the opener … Bradley made 14-of-28 free throws, including 9-of-18 in the second half.
