PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley Volleyball head coach
Carol Price-Torok made five additions to the 2017 roster announcing Thursday that 5-11 middle blocker/opposite
Sarah Shaw (O'Fallon, Mo./Collierville [Tenn.]/UT-Martin) will transfer from UT-Martin along with the additions of 5-7 setter
Hunter Byrne (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins), 5-10 outside hitter
Michaela Hoffa (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), 5-7 defensive specialist
Jade Humphrey (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) and 5-8 defensive specialist
Emma Raleigh (Chullowhee, N.C./Smoky Mountain) to the squad for the upcoming 2017 season.
"In addition to an experienced returning group, I think our recruiting efforts have resulted in a solid incoming class which gives us added depth and versatility," said Price-Torok. "We had a solid spring season and our newcomers will continue to add to the dynamics we have in the gym already. It's a great time to be a part of Bradley volleyball."
A four-time all-conference honoree at Ladue Horton Watkins High School, Byrne was a first-team all-league performer as a senior and garnered Suburban East Conference Sportswoman of the Year. She was named to the Ritenour Invitational all-tournament each of her final three prep seasons and earned conference all-academic honors all four years.
"Hunter has been extremely successful in both high school and club volleyball and we are looking forward to working with her to help her reach her potential," added Price-Torok.
Byrne was a second-team all-conference selection as a junior after earning honorable mention all-league honors both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Hoffa played four seasons for Circle City Volleyball Club, helping her team to a fifth-place finish at the USAV Nationals in 2015. At Brownsburg High School, she was selected as the team's Best Offensive Player as a senior, where she broke the school single-match kills record with 29. She helped the Bulldogs to a Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship as a junior. An Academic All-State selection this past fall, Hoffa was a member of the National Honors Society.
"Hoffa will add depth to our pin position with her natural knack for scoring and tremendous work ethic," stated Price-Torok. "She has great energy on and off the court and we are looking forward to having her here next fall."
Humphrey, who was recently named to Prepvolleyball.com's Dandy Lions list, averaged 3.4 digs per set during her high school career, collecting 1,189 in her four years. Splitting time between the back row and at outside hitter, she averaged 2.2 kills and 3.4 digs per set as a senior to go with 42 aces despite missing part of the season with an ankle injury. Humphrey posted averages of 2.2 kills and 3.5 digs per set as a junior.
"Jade brings a great deal of experience from a libero standpoint," added Price-Torok. "She is a natural competitor and we're excited to see what she adds to our programs back court this fall."
Raleigh is the niece of Bradley Soccer head coach
Jim DeRose and her father Todd was the head baseball coach at Tennessee (2008-11) and Western Carolina (2000-07). An ankle injury kept her sidelined for her entire senior season and a portion of her junior year, but Raleigh is a three-time All-Western North Carolina Athletic Conference performer. She helped Xcel Volleyball Performance 18X Select team to a USA Volleyball championship in 2016 along with being part of an AAU National Championship team in 2014 and third-place finisher in 2015.
"Emma will bring us tremendous depth from an attacking and back-court role," added Price-Torok. "We're excited to have her in the gym next year."
Shaw will have two years of eligibility remaining after playing each of the past two seasons at UT-Martin. As a sophomore, she was second in kills per set for the Skyhawks in 2016 at 2.00 and owned a .179 attack percentage in addition to ranking second on the squad in blocks per set (0.49).
"Sarah brings a good deal of experience to our team and will be able to contribute right from the start," said Price-Torok. "Her athleticism brings a new dynamic to our offense and I'm excited to see the impact she will have on our squad."
As a senior at Collierville High School in Collierville, Tenn., Shaw ranked 12th in the state in hitting percentage and 28th in blocks while leading the district in both categories. She was a two-time Memphis Commercial Appeal "Best of the Preps" selection. During her junior season, she helped the Dragons to a Division 1 AAA sectional title and state tournament appearance. Shaw earned All-District 15-AAA honors her final prep season.
The group brings Bradley's list of newcomers for 2017 to nine with four transfers and five freshmen joining a roster which features eight returning letterwinners.
