Game Recap: Volleyball |
MUNCIE, Ind. – Sophomore transfer Hannah Angeli became the first player in program history to notch double-doubles in five consecutive matches to open a season and junior Erica Haslag had her third straight double-double, but tournament-host Ball State posted a 26-24, 26-28, 25-22, 25-14 victory over the Braves Friday night.

Angeli was one of five Bradley (2-3 overall) players with 10 or more digs, finishing the night with 10 digs, 35 assists and season-highs of seven kills to become the first player in program history to open a season with five consecutive double-doubles.

Haslag turned in a double-double of her own, her third consecutive straight, with 12 kills and 14 digs as she reached 700 career kills in just her 63rd career match.  She is the third fastest player in program history to reach 700 career kills behind Jenny Pavlas (58 matches) and MVC career kills leader Lindsay Stalzer (61 matches).

Sophomore Alissa Schovanec matched Haslag's kill total with a season-high 12 of her own to hel plead the Braves, while fellow sophomore Kathryn Graf boasted a .350 attack percentage and finished with eight kills to go with seven blocks.

Both teams had strong offensive performances in the set with each squad hitting .333 or better in the opening frame.  The first set featured 12 ties and four lead changes with Bradley fighting off a pair of set points to pull even at 24-24 on kills by Graf and senior Jamie Livaudais.  Ball State (4-1 overall) sealed a 26-24 opening set win, however, after a Bradley service error and a block.

The Braves rallied in the second set to even the match.  After trailing 20-14, Bradley battled back to pull within a point at 22-21.  Livaudais sparked the spurt with a block and kill, while Haslag and Schovanec later capped the run with a block.  A Ball State block gave the Cardinals set point (24-22), but the Braves would eventually fight off four set points.  The score was tied 24-24 after an Angeli kill and Ball State error.

After a Ball State block put the Cardinals back in front, Haslag knotted the score again at 25-25 with a kill.  With Ball State leading 26-25, Livaudais came up with three consecutive kills of her own to power Bradley to a 28-26 win.  Livaudais had four kills and two blocks in the second set.

Bradley tried to rally again in the third set, holding off four set points by the Cardinals.  Ball State led 24-18 when Livaudais and fellow senior Taylor Thiele had back-to-back kills.  A Cardinal attack error pulled the Braves within three points at 24-21 and it was a two-point contest (24-22) following a block by Schovanec and Angeli.  Ball State's Ellie Dunn ended Bradley's rally attempt with her sixth kill of the set, however, to close out a 25-22 Cardinal victory.

Ball State scored the first eight points of the fourth set and never looked back, hitting .407 in the frame en route to a 25-14 victory.  Schovanec had five of her season-best 12 kills in the fourth to lead the Braves.

Bradley closes out play at the Ball State Tournament Saturday with a 2 p.m. (CST) match against Navy.
