Game Recap: Volleyball |
MUNCIE, Ind. – Junior Erica Haslag had career-highs of 28 kills and 24 digs, while sophomore Hannah Angeli turned in her sixth consecutive double-double to lead Bradley Volleyball Saturday afternoon against Navy, but the Mids hung on to edge the Braves 30-28, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20 to conclude the Ball State Tournament.

Haslag came into the match averaging an impressive 6.00 kills per set in the first set on the young season and led Bradley (2-4 overall) offensively in the opening frame with 10 kills.  She went on to collect a career-best 28 kills while hitting .323 for the match with her 28 kills ranking as the second-best performance by a Brave under the 25-point set format adopted in 2008 behind only Alise Tupuritis' 29 kills against Green Bay on Sept. 8, 2012.

Not to be outdone, Angeli had 49 assists 25 digs as she became the first Bradley individual with six consecutive double-doubles since Stephanie Behrns midway through the 2002 campaign.  The last Bradley player to collect at least 45 assists and 25 digs in a match was Wendy Carney (68 assists & 27 digs) vs. Eastern Illinois on Oct. 29, 1988.

Junior transfer Yavianliz Rosado also had a strong performance and earned her first career double-double with 17 digs and a career-best 13 assists.

Both teams were solid defensively in the opening set as Bradley finished with a slim 32-31 advantage in digs.  Bradley fought off six match points by Navy (6-1 overall), before the Mids were finally able to finish off a 30-28 first set.  The Braves led for a good portion of the set early on, but found themselves facing set point at 24-22.  Senior Jamie Livaudais had a kill and the score was tied 24-24 after a Navy error.

The first set featured 19 ties and eight lead changes with the squads trading the next eight points.  With the score knotted at 28-28 following Haslag's 10th kill of the first frame, back-to-back Bradley errors closed out the 30-28 Navy victory.

Bradley jumped out to a 9-2 advantage in the second set, but needed to rally late to even the match.  The Braves later held an 18-12 lead after a Taylor Thiele kill only to have Navy counter with an 8-0 run as the Mids grabbed a 20-18 advantage.  Kills by junior Allison Turner and sophomore Kathryn Graf pulled Bradley even at 20-20 and a 5-0 BU spurt included another Turner kill along with a Michaela Hoffa kill.  Angeli, who had 11 digs in the second set, put the finishing touches on a 25-21 Bradley win with a kill.

After defense dominated early on, the teams both hit .351 or better in the third set.  Navy owned a five-point cushion at 19-14 before another late Bradley push.  Haslag had four of her six third-set kills during a 6-2 spurt by the Braves to pull her team within two at 22-20.  Navy was able to go back in front in the match, however, after winning the third set 25-21.  Bradley hit .351 in the third set compared to .361 for the Mids.

The Braves trailed 19-18 in the fourth set after another Haslag kill.  Navy's Tara Dotzauer and Maggie Phillips answered with kills of their own to extend the Mids' lead back to three (21-18).  Haslag added two more kills down the stretch, collecting eight kills and eight digs in the fourth, but Navy took the fourth set 25-20 to finish off the four-set victory.

Livaudais joined Haslag in double figures with a season-best 13 kills to help lead Bradley offensively.

The Braves will open the longest home stand in program history (10 matches) Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest against Chicago State at Renaissance Coliseum.
