Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Four Bradley Volleyball players had 10 or more kills, paced by junior Erica Haslag's match-high 22 kills, but Chicago State hit .526 in a deciding fifth set to spoil the 2017 home opener for the Braves with a 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 15-8 victory Tuesday at Renaissance Coliseum.

Bradley (2-5 overall) got off to a slow start and found itself down two sets to none, before rallying to force the deciding fifth set.  Chicago State (4-3 overall) extended its win streak to three matches, earning the win in the first five-set match at Renaissance Coliseum in nearly two years.

Haslag tallied 22 kills and 14 digs for her fifth consecutive double-double, finishing with 20 or more kills for the second straight outing and third time this season.  Junior Yavianliz Rosado finished one dig short of matching a career-high as she led Bradley with a match-high 31 digs.

Chicago State hit .326 in the opening set and had just one attack error in the first frame.  Back-to-back blocks by the Cougars broke a 19-19 tie and the Braves later trailed 22-20 after a Kathryn Graf kill.  Lauryn Dela Cruz had three consecutive kills, finishing with six in the first set, to help power Chicago State to a 25-20 win.

After hitting .233 in the first, Bradley heated up to .316 in the second, but Chicago State was up to the task and answered with a .317 attack percentage of its own.  With the score knotted at 21-21, back-to-back Carmen Sarvahal aces put the Cougars in front 23-21.  Bradley pulled within one at 23-22 on a service error and the teams traded points, before Dela Cruz capped a 25-23 Chicago State win with her 13th kill of the night.

Bradley used a big run in the third set to keep the match alive.  Junior Alissa Schovanec sparked a 7-2 Bradley spurt with a kill and block.  Senior Jamie Livaudais added two kills of her own and Haslag punctuated the run with back-to-back kills to help Bradley to a 20-14 advantage.  Chicago State chipped away at the lead to pull within two at 21-19, but sophomore Hannah Angeli made it a three-point cushion at 22-19 and kills by Livaudais and junior Allison Turner gave Bradley set point at 24-19.  The Braves went on to take the set 25-20.

Another run midway through the fourth set helped power Bradley to a 25-16 win and force a fifth set.  A Turner kill gave Bradley a 16-13 lead and junior Abby Ihrke served five consecutive points, capping what was a 5-0 run which gave the Braves a 20-13 edge with an ace.  Haslag, who had eight kills in the fourth set, found the floor with her 20th kill to seal the 25-16 Bradley win as she helped the Braves hit a blistering .423 in the fourth.

The momentum was short lived, however, as Chicago State raced out to 5-0 lead in the fifth set and Bradley never cut the deficit under four points down the stretch.  The Cougars hit .526 in the frame, collecting 11 kills with just one error on 19 swings.  A 15-8 fifth-set victory gave Chicago State the contest and snapped a nine-match Bradley win streak in the all-time series.

Graf joined Haslag in double figures with 11 kills, while hitting at a .348 clip.  Senior Taylor Thiele hit .381 and finished with 10 kills and Schovanec added 10 kills of her own while attacking at a .529 clip.  Angeli had 58 assists, three aces, five kills and eight digs as she finished two digs short of her seventh consecutive double-double.

Bradley continues a 10-match home stand this weekend hosting the CEFCU Classic.  Action gets underway Friday with an 11 a.m. match against Illinois-Chicago and Friday's competition also includes a 6 p.m. contest against Murray State.
