Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Erica Haslag had another big performance, collecting 27 kills and 18 digs for her sixth consecutive double-double, but Illinois-Chicago fought off a pair of Bradley match points and the Flames pulled out a 17-15 fifth-set victory to top the Braves 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 17-15 Friday afternoon in the opening contest of the 2017 CEFCU Classic at Renaissance Coliseum.

Despite controlling the opening set and cruising to a 25-17 first-set victory, Bradley (2-6 overall) needed to rally after dropping sets two and three to UIC (3-3 overall) 25-23 and 25-19.

With the score knotted at 19-19 in the fourth, senior Jamie Livaudais gave the Braves a 20-19 lead with a kill.  Haslag added a pair of kills during a 3-0 BU spurt to push the Braves lead to 24-20 and sophomore Hannah Angeli capped a 25-22 Bradley win with one of her five kills to force a deciding fifth set.  Haslag collected eight of her 27 kills in the fourth.

Illinois-Chicago jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the final frame, but Bradley would rally to take a 10-7 lead on a 5-1 run which included a Livaudais kill and four consecutive UIC errors.  The Flames eventually pulled even at 11-11 and Haslag later broke a 12-12 tie with her 27th kill of the contest.  Sarah Shaw, who saw her first action of the year, gave Bradley match point at 14-12 with her first kill as a Brave.  The lead was short lived, however as UIC tied it up at 14-14 on a Bradley attack error and a block.

Junior Alissa Schovanec found the floor with a kill to once again put Bradley back in front 15-14.  A block error on the Braves tied things for the seventh time in the set at 15-15.  A Bradley error gave UIC a 16-15 advantage and a block by the Flames sealed the 17-15 Illinois-Chicago victory.  The Braves have now played consecutive five-set matches for the first time since the first two contests of the 2015 season and back-to-back five setters at home for the first time since 2003.

In the first set, Bradley hit a blistering .424 as a team and did not commit an attack error.  Junior Yavianliz Rosado notched 10 of her team-best 27 digs in the opening frame to help the Braves limit UIC to an .083 attack percentage in the 25-17 Bradley win.

UIC managed to pull out the second set, despite Bradley hitting .333 in the stanza.  Haslag had seven kills in the second, but the Flames evened the contest at one set each with a 25-23 victory after the Braves held off two UIC set points.

The third set was close throughout and tied at 17-17 when a 6-1 UIC run gave the Flames a commanding 23-18 advantage.  Illinois-Chicago went on to take the third set 25-19.

Haslag finished with a career-best four aces to go with her match-high 27 kills and 18 digs as she collected her sixth consecutive double-double.  She moved up one spot on Bradley's career kills list and is now 24th in school history with 778 kills in her two-plus seasons on The Hilltop.

Angeli had a double-double of her own with 54 assists and 19 digs to help lead four Bradley players in double figures in digs as she added her seventh double-double in eight contests.  Rosado ended up with 27 digs of her own, while senior Taylor Thiele had a season-best 14 digs.

Bradley hit .238 as a team compared to .205 for UIC and held a 93-87 advantage in digs.

The Braves return to action later tonight, facing Murray State in a 6 p.m. match at Renaissance Coliseum to conclude day one of the 2017 CEFCU Classic.
