Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Senior Danielle Brewer scored a career-best 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting as she helped Bradley Women's Basketball to a convincing 88-69 victory at Valparaiso Sunday afternoon.  For the first time in program history the Braves swept a three-game Missouri Valley Conference road swing, improving to 3-0 to start Valley play for just the third time (first since 2008-09).

Bradley (9-5 overall, 3-0 MVC) matched its road win total from last year with the victory and the Braves are now 4-1 in their last five road contests.  Currently owning a four-game win streak (longest since 2011-12), BU is second in the MVC standings behind defending champion Drake (4-0).

Both teams got off to slow starts, with Bradley eventually breaking a 4-4 tie with an 11-0 run.  Shunseere Kent opened the spurt with a driving layup and Brewer added a pair of free throws.  Chelsea Brackmann had a layup after a strong post move to make it a 10-4 BU advantage.  Freshman Emily Marsh hit a three-pointer from the top of the key and followed a steal with a layup as the Braves built a 15-4 lead.  Valparaiso, which entered the game undefeated at home (6-0), chipped away at Bradley's lead, however, making its final four shots to close the first quarter as the Crusaders pulled within three (21-18) after the opening 10 minutes.

Valparaiso took its only lead of the day on a Grace Hales' three-pointer only to have Gabi Haack answer with a three of her own to put the Braves back in front 28-27 nearing the six-minute mark of the second quarter.  A 10-3 Bradley surge, highlighted by four Kent points helped the Braves to a 38-32 lead.  The Braves took a 42-39 advantage into the locker room at the half thanks in part to 12 first-half points by Brewer.

Bradley scored the first eight points of the third quarter to extend the lead to 50-39 less than three minutes into the frame.  Nyjah White, who made her first career start, got free inside for a hoop to start the run and Haack made two free throws on a Valpo technical.  Kent had a steal and breakaway layup on the heels of a Markert jumper to cap the opening run.  The 8-0 spurt to start the third was part of a larger 12-2 BU run to open the period as the Braves had their largest lead to that point at 54-41 nearing the midway point of the third.

Valparaiso opened the third quarter 0-for-7 from the field before finally hitting its first field goal with 3:30 to play in the period.  Bradley was able to extend the advantage to as many as 14 (60-46) and led 64-53 heading to the fourth.

Bradley's lead was 70-58 after Brewer hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the fourth quarter.  Her second three-pointer started a 15-3 run which put the game out of reach.  Brewer assisted a Markert hoop and White added a put-back basket.  Kent added four points of her own with the Braves building a 82-61 advantage with 4:49 left as Bradley cruised to the 88-69 victory.

Brewer's 22-point effort follows up what had been a season-best 17-point effort Friday in the win at Loyola.  She paced five Braves in double figures.  Markert added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Haack and Kent each had 12 points.  Marsh was 5-for-6 from the field and had 13 points off the bench.   and White turned in eight points and five boards in her first start.

The Braves held Valparaiso leading scorer Dani Franklin (17.3 ppg) to just 10 points on 2-of-11 shooting.

After playing nine of the last 12 games away from home, Bradley opens a stretch with six of eight games at Renaissance Coliseum Friday with a 7 p.m. home contest against Southern Illinois.
