Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- A balanced offensive attack, which featured four players in double figures in kills, and a solid defensive effort helped Bradley Volleyball improve to 9-0 at home this season as the Braves posted a 25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 25-12 victory over Loyola Friday night at Renaissance Coliseum.

The win improved Bradley to 15-4 overall and more importantly moved the Braves into a tie with Valparaiso for third in the Missouri Valley Conference standings at 5-2 in league play.  The Braves will host Valparaiso Saturday night in a 7 p.m. contest.

Freshman Hannah Thompson turned in her team-best 10th double-double of the season Friday against the Ramblers (11-8 overall, 3-4 MVC), collecting 12 kills and 18 digs.  Sophomore Sara Maddox finished one kill short of matching her season-high effort and tied Thompson for team-high honors with 12 kills.  Senior Erica Haslag added 11 kills of her own as she passed Betsy Buckhold (1,407 career kills) for third on Bradley's career kills and now has 1,411 kills, while junior Kathryn Graf tallied a season-best 10 kills.

Maddox had four of her 12 kills on the night in the opening set to help Bradley to a 25-21 win.  Haslag had her only two kills of the first two sets during a 6-1 BU spurt which helped the Braves break an 18-18 tie to hold set point at 24-19.  Maddox had a kill and junior setter Hannah Angeli added an ace during the run.  Graf and Maddox later combined for a block to close out the opening-set victory for the Braves.

Loyola got off to a strong start in the second set and hit .382 in the frame.  After trailing by as many as four, Bradley roared back and eventually took a 16-14 lead on one of four Maddox kills in the second.  The lead was short lived, however, and the Ramblers eventually built a 22-18 edge.  Loyola went on to take the second set 25-21 to pull even in the contest.

The Braves nearly matched their combined dig total from the first two sets (29) in the third (27) and held Loyola to a .125 attack percentage.  Bradley built an early 4-1 advantage and led for most on the set before Loyola made a late push.  The Braves led 19-15 after a Rambler error, only to have Loyola battle back to tie things up at 22-22.  The Ramblers held set point at 24-23 after a BU error, but back-to-back kills by Maddox and senior Alissa Schovanec set up a Bradley set point at 25-24.  A Quinn Spieker attack just missed the back corner for the Ramblers on the next point as the Braves went in front two sets to one with a 26-24 win.

Haslag came alive in the fourth set, pounding home six kills on 10 attacks with no errors and helped Bradley hit .424 in what proved to be the final set.  Maddox had a pair of kills and Graf had an ace to highlight an early 4-0 spurt by the Braves which put BU in front 8-4.  After a Loyola point, Bradley put the contest out of reach with an 8-1 run to build a 16-6 edge.  Thompson had a pair of kills and an ace during the decisive run and the Braves cruised to a 25-12 fourth-set win to close out the victory.

Senior Yavianliz Rosado collected a match-high 22 digs to go with seven assists for the Braves.  Angeli added four kills, six digs and a pair of aces in addition to her 40 assists.

Bradley extended its home win streak to nine matches with the victory, marking the team's longest home win streak since winning 10 consecutive home contests between the end for the 2001 season (2) and the first eight home matches of 2002.  The nine home victories are the most for the Braves since posting a 10-5 home mark at Robertson Field House in 2005.

The Braves face Valparaiso Saturday (7 p.m.) in a battle for third place in the MVC standings at Renaissance Coliseum.
