Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Sara Maddox pounded home a season and match-high 18 kills while hitting at a .342 clip and was one of four Braves to collect 10 or more kills as she helped Bradley Volleyball to a 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21 victory over defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Missouri State Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.

The Braves (17-5 overall, 7-3 MVC) swept the regular-season series from Missouri State (11-11 overall, 4-5 MVC) for the first time since 1999 with the win in addition to matching the longest home win streak in program history at 11.  Bradley also won 11 consecutive home matches during the 1985 season during a 32-10 campaign in which the Braves were 12-2 at home.

Maddox attacked at a .342 clip and tallied a season-best 18 kills to help highlight the victory as Bradley held on to sole possession of third-place in the Valley standings.  Senior Erica Haslag added 16 kills of her own, while junior Kathryn Graf hit .375 on the night and finished with 12 kills.  Freshman Hannah Thompson added her team-best 12th double-double of the year with 10 kills and 17 digs.

Six Braves had at least six kills in the outing with junior setter Hannah Angeli adding seven kills, 55 assists, eight digs, three blocks and a pair of aces.  Fellow junior Maggie Revell collected a season-high six blocks to go with her six kills, hitting .455 in the match.

Haslag, Graf and Maddox each had four kills in a 25-19 Bradley victory in the opening set.  The Braves jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never trailed in the frame, pushing the advantage to as many as nine points at 24-15 on Haslag's fourth kill of the stanza.  Missouri State fought off four consecutive set points only to have Maddox close the BU win with her fourth kill.

Bradley battled from behind most of the second set and held off three Missouri State set points after the Bears took a 24-21 lead on a MacKenzie Irwin kill.  A Haslag kill cut the deficit to two at 24-22 and Maddox followed a Missouri State timeout with a kill of her own to pull the Braves within one at 24-23.  Angeli tied things up at 24-24 with an ace, but a BU error and Izzy Gibbany ace gave the Bears the second set 26-24.

The Braves led from wire-to-wire in the third set to go back in front in the contest two sets to one.  Five Bradley players had at least three kills in the third, paced by Revell's four kills on just six attacks.  Despite leading the entire set, the Braves had to make a late push to pull out a 25-21 win in the third.  With Bradley holding a 19-18 advantage, Graf sparked a 3-0 spurt with a kill.  Revell and Haslag added kills of their own as the Braves held a 22-18 edge.  Back-to-back kills from Angeli and Haslag later gave Bradley set point at 24-20 and a Missouri State service error closed a 25-21 BU victory.

Haslag added five more kills in the fourth, but it was Maddox who provided the big spark with eight of her 18 kills coming in the final set.  Maddox broke a 7-7 tie with a kill and added two more kills to highlight a 6-0 run for the Braves which put Bradley out front 13-7.  The Braves were able to extend the lead to as many as eight points (18-10) on a Graf ace, cruising to a 25-21 win to close out the match.

Bradley finishes out a two-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against Southern Illinois.  Saturday's match is Breast Cancer Awareness night with the first 300 fans at Renaissance Coliseum receiving free pink wristbands.
