Game Recap: Volleyball |
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Senior Erica Haslag tallied a season-high 28 kills and a pair of Braves turned in double-doubles, but Bradley Volleyball had a three-match win streak snapped with a tightly contested 27-29, 26-28, 25-21, 24-26 loss at Indiana State Friday.

Despite the setback, Bradley (19-6 overall, 9-4 MVC) held onto sole possession of third-place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with five matches remaining on the regular-season schedule.

The Braves actually held set point in all four sets, with Indiana State (9-16 overall, 2-11 MVC) coming from behind to take the first, second and fourth sets.

Haslag, who reached 1,500 career kills in the match, pounded home 17 of her match-high 28 kills in the first two frames and she hit .323 in the match.  Freshman Hannah Thompson tallied 18 kills and 18 digs for her 15th double-double of the year to break the Bradley freshman record for double-doubles (14) originally set by Marika Giguere in 2000.  Junior Hannah Angeli also had a double-double, her eighth of the season, finishing with seven kills, 47 assists and 13 digs.

The duo of Haslag (8 kills) and Thompson (7 kills) combined for 15 of Bradley's 18 kills in the first set.  The Braves looked to be in control in the opener, owning set point at 24-22 following an Abby Ihrke ace.  Indiana State answered with three consecutive points, however, to give the Sycamores set point at 25-24.  The teams would trade points on the next five serves with Thompson tallying three kills during that span to tie things at 27-27.  Laura Gross put the Sycamores back in front with a kill and a BU error closed out a 29-27 Indiana State win.

After eight kills in the opener, Haslag posted nine kills in a second set, which featured 16 ties and seven lead changes.  The Braves had to rally from behind after Indiana held set point at 24-23, with Haslag answering with back-to-back kills to put Bradley back in front 25-24.  A BU error and Damadj Johnson kill gave Indiana State a 26-25 advantage.  Haslag's ninth kill of the set pulled the Braves even once again (26-26), only to have a Johnson kill give the Sycamores a 27-26 edge and an Indiana State block closed out a 28-26 setback for the Braves.

The trio of Haslag, Thompson and Angeli helped fuel a Bradley rally in the third set as the Braves kept Indiana State from completing the sweep.  The Sycamores led 21-18, when Thompson sparked a 7-0 run with a kill.  Senior Alissa Schovanec had a kill and teamed with Haslag for a block to tie the set at 21-21.  Angeli collected back-to-back kills and Haslag's 22nd kill of the evening gave BU set point at 24-21.  Thompson sealed a 25-21 win for the Braves with an ace.

Despite trailing by as many as five points in the fourth set (17-12), Bradley fought back and would eventually hold set point.  The score was tied at 23-23 on Thompson's 18th kill of the night and Bradley held a 24-23 edge when Angeli followed with a kill of her own.

Laura Gross, who led Indiana State with 19 kills in the match, found the floor with her seventh kill of the set to tie things up at 24-24.  A Madeline Williams kill gave the Sycamores a 25-24 edge and a Nikkie White kill was the final point of the night as Indiana State took the fourth set 26-24.

Senior Yavianliz Rosado led four Bradley players in double figures in digs with a team-best 21 as she pushed her collegiate career dig total over 2,000.

Bradley returns to Renaissance Coliseum next weekend, opening a two-match home stand Friday with a 7 p.m. matchup against league-leading Northern Iowa.
