Game Recap: Volleyball |
DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Erica Haslag hit at a .343 clip and collected 15 kills, while fellow senior Yavianliz Rosado tied for match high honors with 27 digs, but Drake rallied to top Bradley 24-26, 25-20, 25-11, 25-15 in Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball action Friday at the Knapp Center as the Bulldogs snapped an eight-match win streak for the Braves.

The loss was Bradley's first in MVC play and dropped the Braves (14-3 overall, 4-1 MVC) from a tie for first place in the league standings entering the night into a tie with Illinois State for third in the Valley standings at 4-1 behind Valparaiso (5-1) and Northern Iowa (5-0).

Haslag was the only Bradley player to reach double figures in kills, finishing the night with a team-best 15.  Rosado notched her 1,000th career dig as a Brave late in the fourth set to become the 17th Bradley play to reach the mark and finished the match with 27 digs.

Rosado collected 10 of her match-high 27 digs in the first set and Haslag added seven kills on just 14 attack with no errors in the opening frame to highlight a 26-24 Bradley win, which featured 16 ties and six lead changes.  The Braves rallied from as many as four points (14-10) to take a 17-15 lead.  Drake (14-5 overall, 3-2 MVC) answered with a 5-0 run of its own to retake the lead at 20-17, only to have Haslag notch three kills during a 5-1 BU spurt which put the Braves back ahead 22-21.

Haslag's seventh kill of the opening set gave Bradley a 23-22 edge and the Braves eventually held set point at 24-23 on a block by freshman Rachel Pranger and junior Kathryn Graf.  After Drake tied things up for the final time at 24-24, Graf found the floor with her third kill of the set and a Bulldog error helped the Braves take the opener 26-24.

Pranger came alive in the second set for Bradley, tallying six kills on just eight swings.  Bradley managed just 11 kills in the frame, however, as Drake evened up the match with a 25-20 victory.  A 5-0 Bulldog run midway the stanza gave Drake a 20-13 edge as the Bulldogs held off the Braves down the stretch to claim the second.

Bradley hung with Drake early in the third set, before back-to-back Grace Schofield kills help spark a 6-0 run for the Bulldogs.  The Braves trailed 11-9 when Schofield turned in the back-to-back kills which was part of a larger 14-2 Drake spurt as the Bulldogs took the third set 25-11.

Drake carried that momentum into the fourth set jumping out a 5-1 lead to force an early Bradley timeout.  The Braves eventually found themselves in a 12-6 hole and the Bulldogs would later push the lead to 10.  Drake went on to take the fourth set 25-15 as the Bulldogs snapped an eight-match win streak for the Braves with a four-set victory.

Schofield led Drake with 19 kills and 19 digs, while Cathryn Cheek added 17 kills for the Bulldogs.

Bradley closes out a two-match road swing Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at league-leading Northern Iowa.
