Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Chicago, Ill. – The Bradley men's basketball team nearly rallied from a 14-point, second-half deficit but its final attempt at a win fell just short in a 71-70 setback at UIC on Saturday night. The Braves drop their first game of the 2018-19 season and are now 3-1, while the Flames improve to 2-3.

Three Braves scored season highs on Saturday, led by junior Darrell Brown's 19 points. Classmates Nate Kennell and Antoine Pittman also added 15 and 14 points, respectively, as the trio combined for 48 points on 17-of-34 shooting and a 6-of-13 mark from 3-point range.

Brown and Kennell also led BU with four assists, while sophomore Elijah Childs chipped in 10 points to go with a game-high eight rebounds.

The two teams battled in a back-and-forth first half that featured 12 lead changes and nine ties. The Flames received a little cushion before the break with an 8-3 run that gave UIC a 40-36 lead at the half.

In the second stanza, UIC came out strong and pushed its lead to 14, 52-38, after 12-2 run in the first three minutes of the period. Bradley, however, would fight back and used 12-2 run of its own to pull within four, 57-53, with just under 10 minutes remaining. BU finally drew even at 63 when a basket from Childs squared the contest with 4:49 left in regulation.

UIC would answer back, though, with six-straight points for a 69-63 advantage with just 1:26 left. Bradley continued to fight and a 3-pointer from Pittman with just 7.9 ticks left brought BU within one, 71-70. After a video replay on an out-of-bounds call and an empty trip to the free throw line by the Flames, Bradley had a look at a winning shot but the ball hit the front of the rim and stayed out as UIC held on for victory.

UIC made 46.2 percent of its field goals in the winning effort, while Bradley hit 42.9 percent of its field goals.

Tarkus Ferguson led the Flames with 22 points and 10 assists.

Bradley looks to return to the winning column when it travels to Mexico for the Cancun Challenge. The Braves open the tournament against SMU on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CT.

Game Notes: Childs is the first Brave to lead the team in rebounds in each of the first four games since Danny Granger did so in 2001-02 … Pittman last scored 14 points in a game on Dec. 16, 2016 against UT Arlington … Brown surpassed 900 points for his career with the junior now totaling 903 career points … Bradley now leads the series with UIC, 5-2.
