Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley Volleyball looked to extend the longest home win streak in program history to 13, but 25th-ranked Northern Iowa handed their Braves their first home loss in nearly a full calendar year as the league-leading Panthers pulled out a 25-22, 25-19, 25-23 victory Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.

Senior Erica Haslag notched a match-high 16 kills and freshman Hannah Thompson recorded her 16th double-double of the season (10 kills & 10 digs) in the setback which dropped Bradley to 12-1 at home in 2018.  The Braves (19-7 overall, 9-5 MVC) held on to a share of third place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, dropping into a tie with Valparaiso for third in the league after the Crusaders rallied for a five-set victory at Loyola Friday night.

The first set had eight ties and three lead changes, before Northern Iowa (19-7 overall, 13-0 MVC) took the opener 25-22.  Neither team led by more four points in the first, with Bradley battling back from four down to pull even at 15-15 on one of five first-set kills from sophomore Sara Maddox

The score was knotted later on at 19-19, before UNI's Kate Busswitz had a kill and an Abbi Staack ace gave the Panthers a 21-19 advantage.  Back-to-back UNI blocks later pushed the UNI lead to 23-20 and the Panthers eventually held set point at 24-21.  Haslag found the floor with her fifth kill of the set, but UNI's Piper Thomas answered with a kill of her own as UNI won the opener.

Bradley trailed 12-9 in the second set following a Haslag kill, only to have Northern Iowa rattle off the next six points.  Taylor Hedges had an ace and back-to-back kills from Karlie Taylor capped the Panther run which pushed the UNI advantage to 18-9.

The Braves didn't go quietly, however, chipping away at the lead and would pull within two at 21-19 on a Panther error.  Junior Kathryn Graf had a pair of blocks during a 5-0 Bradley run, which also included a Kat Poore ace and Thompson kill.   A Busswitz kill put a stop to the Bradley run and UNI scored the final four points of the frame to claim the second set 25-19.

Haslag took over in the third set, pounding home nine kills on 18 swings with just one error in the stanza.  The third set was close throughout, featuring nine ties and a pair of lead changes.  Bradley had its largest lead of the third on a Thompson kill to go in front 16-14.  The lead was short lived, unfortunately, with UNI coming up with four consecutive points to go back in front 18-16.

A Haslag kill would tie things up at 20-20 and Haslag answered consecutive UNI points with kills to keep things even at 22-22.  With UNI leading 23-22, Poore and senior Alissa Schovanec teamed for a block to once again tie it up at 23-23.  Back-to-back kills by UNI's Jaydlin Seehase provided the final two points of the night as the Panthers completed a sweep with a 25-23 third-set victory.

Senior Yavianliz Rosado collected 10 of her 20 digs on the night in the third set and now owns the third-best season dig total in Bradley history (546).

Taylor led Northern Iowa with 14 kills, while libero Kendyl Sorge led the Panther defensive efforts with 20 digs.

Bradley closes out a two-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. match against Drake at Renaissance Coliseum.
