Braves Win Third-Straight, Defeat Chicago State, 86-70

Peoria, Ill. – Four Braves scored in double figures and an early 21-1 run lifted the Bradley men's basketball team to an 86-70 victory against Chicago State on Saturday afternoon. Coming off a Cancun Challenge title in Mexico, the Braves improved to 6-1 on the season and claimed their third-straight win.
 
Junior Darrell Brown led the Braves with 16 points, while also recording a team-best four assists. Sophomore Elijah Childs corralled a game-high 11 boards to go with 12 points for his second double-double in three games.
 
Senior Luuk van Bree and junior Nate Kennell rounded out the double-digit performances with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Braves controlled the game from an early point as a 21-1 run had BU in front by double-digits for all but two of the final 30 minutes of the game. Bradley made 6-of-7 field goals during the stretch (3-of-4 from 3-point range), while also adding six free throws. The defense also held Chicago State without a field goal for nearly six minutes to go with five turnovers as Bradley turned a 10-6 deficit into a 27-11 lead.
 
Chicago State (0-8) closed the gap to seven points with just over a minute remaining in the first half before freshman Ja'Shon Henry finished the half with three points for a 43-33 advantage at the intermission.
 


Bradley carried its momentum into the second stanza when the Braves outscored the Cougars, 30-12, over the first 12 minutes to stretch its advantage to as many as 28 points, 73-45, as BU matched its largest victory of the season with the 16-point win.
 
BU shot over 50 percent for the third time in seven games this season, making 50.8 percent of its baskets on Saturday. The Braves also held Chicago State to 39.6 percent shooting – the fourth time an opponent has shot under 40 percent in 2018-19.
 
The Braves look to continue their winning ways at they take their show on the road at IUPUI. Game time on Wednesday is set for 6 p.m. CT.
 
Game Notes: Brown has scored at least 10 points in all seven games – the longest streak by a Brave to start the year since 2007-08 … Bradley made 17-of-18 free throws in the game – its 94.4 percent is the team's highest since hitting 96.4 percent against Creighton in 2010 … Five Braves scored season-high totals – van Bree, Henry, Jayden Hodgson, Armon Brummett and Peter Hanley … The Bradley bench totaled 36 points – had entered the game with 59 total reserve points in six games (9.8 per game) and no more than 16 in any single game … Bradley has won all 17 games with Chicago State.
