For the second time in three weeks, a Bradley men's basketball player is the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after sophomore forward Elijah Childs earned the honor for leading the Braves to the Cancun Challenge Championship.

In a 3-0 week for BU, Childs averaged 17.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks, while shooting 62.9 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from 3-point range. Named the Cancun Challenge MVP, the sophomore forward tallied 19.5 points and 7.5 boards in wins against SMU and Penn State as he helped lead Bradley to its first regular-season tournament title in 35 years.

Childs opened the week with career-best totals of 21 points and 12 rebounds in the victory against the Mustangs before adding 18 points – 13 in the second half – in the title game versus the Nittany Lions. He finished the week with his second double-double of the season, collecting 12 points and 11 rebounds versus Chicago State on Saturday.

Through seven games of his sophomore season, Childs lead the Braves with 14.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals to go with 1.3 blocks per game. He currently ranks ninth in the Valley in scoring, first in rebounding, fifth in steals and ninth in blocks as he has helped the Braves to a 6-1 start in the 2018-19 campaign.

The weekly accolade is the first for Childs during his career. He joins teammate Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye as recipients of Valley Player of the Week honors in 2018-19, marking the first time since the 2010-11 season that two different Braves have earned the award.

Childs and the Braves are back in action on Wednesday and look to continue their winning ways at IUPUI. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.
