Game Recap: Softball |
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Bradley Softball slugged seven doubles among its season-high 17 hits and had its highest scoring game in over a year, posting a 12-8 victory over UMKC Friday afternoon to wrap up the first day of the Blues City Classic.

Junior Gabby Stoner and sophomore Kealia Wysocki both collected three hits to highlight a Bradley offensive attack which featured seven players with multi-hit games.  Junior Megan Mahaffy picked up the victory out of the bullpen for her first win of the season.

Bradley (5-7 overall) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a first-inning sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Maria Schroeder.  The lead was short lived, however, with UMKC (3-9 overall) scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to go in front 4-1.  Olivia Fluehr highlighted the inning for the Kangaroos with a three-run homer.

The Braves would tie it up at 4-4 with a three-run second inning.  Mahaffy followed a two-out single by freshman Jillian Navarro with a double and Stoner drove in the first run of the inning with a single.  Senior Elizabeth Leonard drove in two more runs on a double down the left field line.

A RBI single by Navarro in the top of the third gave Bradley its first lead of the game at 5-4.  Wysocki had a one-out double and later scored on the Navarro hit to right field.

UMKC couldn't score after loading the bases in the third, but would take advantage of a Bradley error in the fourth to plate a pair of runs.  A walk and error to open the inning put a pair of runners on for Maegan Rollow, who drove them both in with a single up the middle to put the Kangaroos back in front 6-5.

The Braves broke the game open with a seven-run fifth.  Bradley loaded the bases on a Wysocki single, Stacia Seeton double and Navarro walk.  Wysocki scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch and Mahaffy drove in another run with a double to left as the Braves went in front 7-6.  Schroeder added two more runs with a single and junior Katie Habryle capped the inning with a three-run double to give Bradley a 12-6 advantage.

Mahaffy, who took over in the circle for Bradley starter Julie Kestas in the fourth, worked around a leadoff walk in the fifth and sat UMKC down in order the sixth.

The Braves threatened again in the seventh, leaving a pair of runners on base and UMKC tried to rally in the bottom half of the frame.  Three BU errors led to two UMKC runs in the inning, before Mahaffy got a groundout to close out the victory.

Bradley and UMKC will play again Saturday at 9 a.m. to kick off the second day of play at the Blues City Classic in Memphis, Tenn.
