After helping the Bradley baseball team to victories over Big Ten foe Illinois and MVC power Missouri State, junior Mitch Janssen was recognized as a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week in addition to collecting Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Janssen pitched 10.1 innings in a pair of starts against the Illini and Bears, yielding just one run on three hits with 14 strikeouts. He began the week by working the first 3.2 innings at Illinois, where he exited after 72 pitches and a 3-1 lead in an eventual 4-3 victory. Then in an emergency start Saturday working on just three-days rest, Janssen responded with a career-high 10 strikeouts – holding Missouri State scoreless on two hits and a walk in 6.2 innings. At one point, Janssen retired 18-consecutive Bears in the 2-0 victory.

Overall, Janssen has appeared in 12 games during the 2018 campaign with a 4-0 record. He has also posted a 4.03 earned run average to go with a team-leading 48 strikeouts in 44.2 innings of work.

Janssen is the first Brave to earn National Player of the Week accolades since pitcher Brent Stong was recognized by Louisville Slugger on March 2, 2015. He is also the team's first MVC Pitcher of the Week since Matt Dennis during the 2016 campaign.

Currently in third place in the MVC standings, Janssen and the Braves return to action this weekend against I-74 rival Illinois State. The three-game series is set to begin on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
