Bradley 9, at Illinois State 6 – 13 innings

NORMAL, IL – Andy Shadid led off the 13th inning with a home run and Bradley (27-11, 9-4 MVC) tacked on a pair of insurance tallies to take the opening game of its weekend I-74 Rivalry series against Illinois State (17-25, 4-9 MVC) Friday night at Duffy Bass Field.

With the victory in its longest game of the season, Bradley extended its overall and road winning streaks against teams from Illinois to nine games.  A year after finishing 20-31 overall and 6-14 in The Valley, the Braves also picked up their 20th win away from home this season, as well as their sixth win in seven Valley road games.

Although he surrendered an unearned run in the eighth inning that allowed Illinois State to pull into a 6-6 tie, junior RHP Boby Johnson (W 2-1) worked a season-long 5.0 innings to pick up his second extra-innings road win on I-74 this season.  Johnson also was the winning pitcher in Bradley's 4-3 win in 11 innings April 24 at Illinois.  Johnson struck out six in his winning effort.  Brian Schrimmer worked a scoreless 13th inning, recovering from a leadoff walk to strike out two and induce a game-ending ground out for his second save of the year.

The Braves got the scoring started when Andrew Ivelia, who hit long foul balls down the left field line the two previous pitches, launched his second home run of the year over the left field wall for a 2-out, solo blast in the top of the first.  After a 1-out walk in the bottom of the first, Cole Cook had two chances at a scoreless frame, but the Braves were unable to turn a 4-6-3 double play and then allowed a shallow pop into right field to drop before Noah Sandler put the Redbirds ahead with a 2-out, 2-run single.

Bradley wasted little time getting the runs back in the second.  After Dan Bolt drew a leadoff walk, freshman catcher Keaton Rice chased him around the bases with his first career triple and Nick McMurray followed with a RBI single for a 3-2 lead before the Braves made an out in the inning.  With Bradley's defense struggling with the setting sun, the Redbirds pulled even in the home half of the second when John Rave followed a Nick Zouras 2-out single with a high fly ball that dropped over Eli Rawlinson's right shoulder onto the left field warning track for a RBI double.

The back-and-forth scoring continued in the third inning when Derek Bangert followed Ivelia's leadoff walk with a moon shot over the left field foul pole for his fifth home run of the year and a 5-3 Braves lead.  Illinois State managed to get only one of the two runs back in the home half of the third, however, scoring an unearned run on a Joe Aeilts RBI single before Cook got a strikeout and fielder's choice ground out to strand a pair of runners.

After the teams suddenly went scoreless for the next three innings, the sky once again factored into Illinois State's tying run.  With two outs and a runner at second in the bottom of the seventh, Aeilts lofted a soft fly ball into medium left center field, but the ball was lost in a dusky sky and dropped for a RBI double, tying the game at 5-5.

The Braves used an unlikely, 2-out rally to once again pull ahead.  A trio of Illinois State pitchers had combined to retire 10 straight Bradley hitters until Rice reached on a catcher's interference with two outs in the eighth.  McMurray pushed Rice around to third by following with a line drive single to right field and Shadid brought home the go-ahead run by beating out a 2-hopper to third base.

The see-saw affair quickly resumed, however, as Illinois State needed just two batters to again force a tie, 6-6, against Johnson.  Pinch-hitter Jack Butler opened the home half of the eighth with a double down the left field line and scored when Johnson threw away Rave's sacrifice bunt attempt.

Shadid led off the top of the 13th with his third home run of the season, a towering shot just inside the left field foul pole against Illinois State's sixth pitcher, Jeff Lindgren (L 3-4).  After Ivelia and Bangert hit consecutive, 1-out singles, Dougherty provided some insurance with a RBI double.  Rice added a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to complete the scoring.

Due to the threat of thunderstorms Sunday, the teams will wrap up the series by playing a doubleheader Saturday.  The first game will begin at the originally-scheduled 2 p.m. start time.
