Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – Senior Andrew Ivelia hit a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Bradley baseball team to an 8-6 victory against SIUE at Dozer Park on Wednesday night. The win moves the Braves to 29-12 on the year, while the Cougars drop to 14-32.

After SIUE scored four runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at six, Nick McMurray led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk. Andy Shadid successfully sacrificed McMurray to second before the Cougars elected to intentionally walk Luke Mangieri. The Braves then took advantage of a wild pitch to move two runners into scoring position with just one out before Ivelia brought them both home with a single to right center.

Boby Johnson then worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth – striking out the final two batters – to secure the win for Bradley.

Mangieri led the Braves by reaching base in all five of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks and three runs scored on the night. Ivelia drove in a team-best three runs, while sophomore Brendan Dougherty and freshman Eli Rawlinson each hit two-run homers for the Braves.

Bradley struck with three runs in the first two innings to take the lead against the Cougars. Mangieri drew his first walk of the game in the first and took two bases on a wild pitch before scoring on Ivelia's sacrifice fly. In the second inning, Rawlinson hit his fifth home run of the year to quickly extend the Bradley lead to three after two.

The Cougars pulled one back in both the fourth and fifth innings for the 3-2 contest before Bradley plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Shadid scored the team's fourth run on a fielding error before Dougherty's bomb to right field gave the Braves a 6-2 lead.

SIUE took advantage of a Bradley error, however, to get back into the game. The Cougars drew three walks to start the eighth and scored one run via a sacrifice fly. Bradley then nearly got out of the inning with no more damage only for a fielding error with two outs to extend the frame with SIUE tying the game on a two-out single from Mario Tursi.

The Braves finally got out of the inning, setting up Ivelia's heroics in the bottom half of the eighth for the 8-6 victory.

Bradley continues its final home stand of the 2018 season when it hosts Dallas Baptist for a three-game series this weekend. The Valley's second and third place teams begin the trio of games on Friday at Dozer Park at 6 p.m.
