Valley Announces Annual Academic Awards

More than three-quarters of Bradley student-athletes qualified for the MVC Honor Roll in 2017-18

ST. LOUIS – With another record-setting academic year in the books, more than three-quarters of Bradley University's student-athlete population received recognition from the Missouri Valley Conference Monday by being named to the annual MVC Honor Roll. Bradley's 224 student-athletes completed the 2017-18 school year with a department-record 3.43 collective cumulative grade point average, led by 172 (76.8 percent) Braves who qualified for the MVC Honor Roll.

Bradley received the 2018 MVC All-Academic Award earlier this month after posting the league's best grade point average for the third consecutive year. The Valley released its annual academic honors lists Monday, including the Presidents Council Academic Award, the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award and the MVC Honor Roll.

The President's Council Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.8 cumulative grade point average (through Spring 2018 semester), participation in athletics a minimum two years and the student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation. The Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.5 GPA the previous two semesters, a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and participation in athletics; while the MVC Honor Roll requires a minimum 3.2 semester GPA during the Fall 2017 or Spring 2018 semester with varsity team status and enrollment in at least 12 hours during the fall or spring semesters.

Among the noteworthy achievements from Monday's announcement:

All 15 Bradley teams are represented by multiple Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award recipients with 61 honorees in total.
36 Bradley student-athletes coupled All-Missouri Valley Conference athletic achievement with a spot on the MVC Honor Roll.
Individual conference champions Jake Hoffert (Men's Cross Country), Drake Bushong (Men's Golf) Michael Ward (Men's Track indoor 3K and 5k) and Haran Dunderdale (Men's Track steeplechase) all qualified for the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award.
Bradley led The Valley with the most qualifiers on the MVC Honor Roll in five of its 11 sports (cross country and track were counted together):
- A league-best nine men's basketball players from Bradley qualified for the MVC Honor Roll.
- Bradley's 2018 MVC champion men's golf team also topped the nine MVC men's golf squads with nine MVC Honor Roll qualifiers.
- Bradley men's soccer equaled SMU as the most-improved team in the nation by W-L record and equaled Drake for the most student-athletes to qualify for the MVC Honor Roll, each with 22.
- Bradley's 17 volleyball qualifiers for the MVC Honor Roll were three more than any other team (Illinois State, 14).
- Bradley women's basketball equaled Drake with 13 MVC Honor Roll qualifiers.
