Braves Top Surrey Scorchers in Europe Opener

The Bradley men's basketball led wire-to-wire in its foreign trip opener, defeating the Surrey Scorchers of the British Basketball League, 73-66, on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Elijah Childs led the Braves with 20 points and nine rebounds – shooting 9-of-14 from the field – as the Braves dominated the inside in the winning effort. Bradley outrebounded a team made up of professionals, which included a number of former college standouts, by a 52-30 margin. BU collected 25 offensive rebounds in the contest to hold a 12-point edge in second-chance points.

Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye also chipped in 10 points to go with five rebounds and a team-leading five assists as the senior helped the Braves to victory in front of his hometown crowd. Redshirt junior Antoine Pittman added nine points, while senior Luuk van Bree was second on the team with eight rebounds.

The Braves never trailed in the game and led by 20 points at the half, 43-23. Childs had nine first-half points to go with seven from Pittman for the advantage after 20 minutes.

In the second half, Surrey closed the gap thanks to an edge at the free-throw line. The Scorchers made 18-of-22 from the charity stripe but the Braves finished strong as Lautier-Ogunleye scored four-straight points and set up Childs for three baskets of his own, leading to the seven-point victory.
