Game Recap: Volleyball |
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Bradley opened up Missouri Valley Conference play with a road victory for the first time since 2005 and earned its first road sweep of a Valley opponent since 2006 with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-21 win over Southern Illinois Friday at Davies Gym.

The Braves (11-2 overall, 1-0 MVC) hit .337 in the victory, surpassing last year's overall win total of 10 and have now posted had more wins than the previous season in four consecutive years.  Bradley is 11-2 to start a season for the first time in program history after picking up a road win at Southern Illinois (4-10 overall, 0-1 MVC) for the second consecutive year and fourth time in the last eight trips to Carbondale.

Senior Erica Haslag collected a match-high 11 kills, hitting .310 in the victory, while freshman Hannah Thompson hit .429 and notched her team-best sixth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs.  Junior setter Hannah Angeli finished with six kills on just nine attacks and also tallied 30 assists and six digs for the Braves.

Haslag helped highlight a 25-16 opening set victory with five of her 11 kills in the first set.  Bradley broke the first set open with a 7-1 run to push a 13-10 advantage to 20-11.  Junior Maggie Revell got things started with a kill and added a pair of blocks during the spurt and Haslag recorded two kills of her own to give the Braves a commanding lead.  A kill by senior Alissa Schovanec would eventually close out a 25-16 Bradley win.

Southern Illinois held an early 3-2 lead in the second set, only to have Bradley answer with six consecutive points as the Braves went in front 8-3.  Bradley broke the contest open with a late 7-0 spurt to extend the lead to 13 at 22-9.  The Braves hit .385 in the second behind four kills on five attacks from Angeli as the Braves took the second set 25-12.

Neither team led by more than three points early in the third set, with eight ties and four lead changes before an Angeli kill tied things up at 18-18.  Haslag later broke a 19-19 tie with her fourth kill of the frame and she followed a SIU error with a block to give Bradley a 22-19 advantage.  The Braves eventually held set point on a Sara Maddox kill and Thompson closed out the sweep and a 25-21 BU win with her 10th kill of the evening.

Senior Yavianliz Rosado helped lead Bradley's defensive efforts with a match-high 21 digs to push her BU career total over 900 as she helped the Braves limit Southern Illinois to a .136 attack percentage.

Bradley returns to action Saturday, taking on defending MVC champion Missouri State in a 7 p.m. match in Springfield, Mo.
