Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Freshman Hannah Thompson notched a season-best 24 kills and senior libero Yavianliz Rosado came up with a career-best 35 digs to help Bradley Volleyball to a 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 26-24 victory over Indiana State Friday at Renaissance Coliseum as the Braves pushed their win streak to seven.

Bradley (13-2 overall, 3-0 MVC) improved to 3-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play with the victory, marking just the third time in program history the Braves started out league play with a 3-0 record (2005 & 2002).  In addition, Bradley continued its best start as the Braves upped their record to 13-2 to match the team's highest season win total since winning 16 contests in 2005.  Bradley also won 13 contests during the 2013 campaign.  The seven-match win streak is BU's longest since an eight-match win streak in 2005.

Senior Erica Haslag got off to a hot start, recording four kills on her first five swings of the night and finished with 17 kills to help highlight the four-set victory.  Haslag was one of three Braves to collect four or more kills in the opening set.  She and freshman Rachel Pranger had back-to-back kills to spark a 5-1 BU spurt which put Bradley ahead 22-16 in the opener.  The Braves hit .300 in the first set and cruised to a 25-18 victory.

Indiana State slowed down Bradley enough in the second set to pull even the match with a 25-23 win.  The Braves led for most of the stanza and held a 23-20 advantage on an Alissa Schovanec kill.  The Sycamores (7-9 overall, 0-4 MVC) tied things up at 23-23 with a Rhiannon Morozoff kill, Madeline Williams ace and a blocks, however.  Indiana State, which notched eight blocks in the second and 12 in the match, got back-to-back blocks from Damadj Johnson to take the second set 25-23.

After five kills in the first and six in the second, Thompson put together her strongest offensive set of the night in the third with seven kills to help power Bradley to a convincing 25-15 win.  Consecutive Thompson kills keyed a 5-1 run by the Braves which gave BU a 15-10 lead.  Haslag added three kills down the stretch, while Schovanec, Thompson and Pranger each added two kills of their own to help Bradley hit .364 as a team in the third-set victory.  Rosado came up with 12 of her career-best 35 digs in the third.

Bradley never trailed in the fourth set, but had to hold off a late push from Indiana State.  The Braves owned a 17-11 lead after back-to-back kills from Thompson forced a Sycamore timeout and the lead was still six at 21-15 following one of Haslag four kills in the fourth.  Indiana State rallied from a 23-19 deficit to pull even at 23-23, thanks in part to a pair of Morozoff kills.

Haslag gave Bradley match point at 24-23 with her 17th kill of the night, only to have Indiana State knot things up again at 24-24 on a BU attack error.  Thompson found the floor with her season-best 24th kill of the match and sixth of the fourth set to set up match point again for the Braves at 25-24.  Pranger, who finished with 12 kills of her own, capped a 26-24 four-set win to seal the victory with her fifth kill of the frame.

Rosado's career-best 35 digs tied the fourth-best single-match performance in school history and ranks as the most digs by a Brave since Lauren Zerante had 36 digs at Northern Iowa on Nov. 22, 2013.  Junior setter Hannah Angeli added a career-best 62 assists to help pace the Bradley offense.  Thompson hit .305 in her 24-kill effort, which ranks as the most kills by a Bradley Haslag had 24 kills against Southeast Missouri State on Sept, 18, 2015.

In addition to pushing their overall win streak to seven, the Braves improved to a perfect 7-0 at home in 2018 to tie the Renaissance Coliseum season record for victories.  Bradley's last home win streak of at least seven matches was during the 2002 season (19-12 overall) and was capped by a four-set victory over seventh-ranked Northern Iowa (Sept. 20, 2002).

Bradley closes out a two-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. match against Evansville at Renaissance Coliseum.
