Hannah Thompson Named MVC Freshman Of The Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Freshman outside hitter Hannah Thompson (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week according to an announcement by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Thompson earned all-tournament honors at the CEFCU Invitational, helping Bradley Volleyball to a 3-0 record and the tournament title over the weekend. The 5-8 outside hitter averaged 3.00 kills and an impressive 6.45 digs per set in three victories. Bradley's first MVC Freshman of the Week award winner since Jessica Teel in 2012, Thompson opened the weekend with her second double-double of the year, tallying 16 kills and a season-best 29 digs to go with one assist, one ace and two blocks in a four-set victory over Western Illinois. Her 29 digs were the most by a Brave other than a libero since 2005.

Thompson collected six kills and 23 digs in a three-set sweep of Toledo Saturday, helping Bradley break the school record for digs in a three-set match which had stood since 1988. She capped the week with her team-best third double-double of the week with 11 kills and 19 digs, while hitting at .312 clip in a four-set win over George Washington. Thompson has helped Bradley to a 5-1 record to match the best six-match start in program history.

One of just two players to rank in the top 10 in the MVC in both kills per set (5th - 3.35) and digs per set (6th - 4.61), Thompson is joined by Indiana State senior Laura Gross. She has earned all-tournament honors at each of Bradley's first two tournaments of 2018. Thompson is just the fifth Brave in the last 27 years to tally at least 75 kills and 75 digs in the first six matches of a season (complete box scores unavailable for the 1991 Bradley Volleyball season) and the only player with 75 kills and 100 digs in the first six outings of a season during that same span.

Thompson and the Braves head to Gadsden, Ala., for the Gamecock Classic, with Bradley opening tournament play Friday morning against Western Carolina (10 a.m.).
