Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Carbondale, Ill. – The Bradley men's basketball team outscored Southern Illinois, 19-8, over the last six-plus minutes to earn its first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season, posting a 57-54 road win. Both teams are now 9-10 overall on the year, while the Braves move to 1-5 in conference play and the Salukis drop to 2-4.

Junior Darrell Brown scored a game-high 16 points in the winning effort, including five points in the final 90 seconds in the final ticks of the shot clock. Brown also added a team-best three assists, with senior Luuk van Bree corralling a game-high nine rebounds in his first start of the season.

Sophomore Elijah Childs added 12 points and junior Nate Kennell also reached double figures with 11 points.

The Braves opened the game strong on the defensive end and built an early lead. A 10-2 run put Bradley in front, 12-7, and the Braves stretched their lead to seven, 19-12, with under five minutes remaining. BU forced the Salukis to miss 14 of their first 18 shots as Bradley gained the early advantage.

Southern Illinois, however, finally found its offensive rhythm in the final five minutes of the first to grab a halftime lead. The Salukis made six of their final seven shots and a 14-1 stretch gave SIU a 26-20 advantage at the break.

The SIU lead hovered between four and seven points for most of the first 15 minutes of the second half before the Braves made their move. Three free throws by the Braves cut the lead to five before SIU added one of their own for a 47-41 advantage with five minutes remaining. Kennell then connected on his third triple of the game before Childs' and-one squared the contest at 47 with 4:02 left.

The Salukis briefly moved ahead with three free throws surrounded by a Brown to Childs alley-oop. 50-49. However, Kennell made two free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot for a 51-50 advantage, setting up Brown's late heroics. On the team's next possession, the junior guard made a 3-pointer from the wing as the shot clock expired for a 54-50 lead. SIU pulled back within two with 59.1 seconds left but Brown's step-back jumper from 18 feet with 30.1 seconds remaining put Bradley back in front by four, 56-52. After an SIU basket, Bradley added a free throw and then forced two air balls on the defensive end for its first Valley win of the season.

Bradley shot 35.2 percent in the winning effort, while holding the Salukis to 39.2 percent shooting and 5-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Braves also held a 40-31 advantage on the glass for a six-point edge in second-chance points.

The Braves look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday with a home game against I-74 rival Illinois State. Tip off at Carver Arena is set for 6 p.m.

Game Notes: Bradley won its first game at Southern Illinois since 2013 as the home team had won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the schools … Bradley improved to 8-4 when Childs scores in double figures (1-6 when he doesn't) … The Braves are now 4-6 this season when trailing at the half … Bradley has held its first six Valley opponents under 70 points for the first time since 1997-98.
