Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley Volleyball had a chance to move into a tie for second place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, but Loyola topped the Braves 25-19, 27-25, 25-20 Saturday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum despite the 16th double-double of the year from BU sophomore Hannah Thompson.

Loyola (14-7 overall, 7-1 MVC) used late pushes in all three sets to pull away in the tightly contested match, which featured 26 ties and 12 lead changes throughout.  Thompson notched a team-high 10 kills and also came up with a match-high 17 digs to lead Bradley (9-10 overall, 5-3 MVC).  The setback moved the Braves into fourth in the Valley standings nearing the midway point of the MVC regular-season schedule, while Loyola moved into a tie with Northern Iowa atop the MVC standings at 7-1.

In the opener, Bradley held a 16-14 lead after a Thompson kill, before the Ramblers rattled off four consecutive points to go in front 18-16.  The Braves trailed 19-18 following one of Kat Poore's three first-set kills, only to have Loyola answer with a 5-0 run.  Addie Barnes had a pair of aces during the spurt as the Ramblers went on take the set 25-19.

The second set had 12 ties and six lead changes with both teams having chances to take the frame.  Bradley jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, but Loyola would quickly even things up at 10-10.  The Braves held a 23-21 lead after a Rambler service error and eventually held set point at 24-23 on a Sara Maddox kill.

A Bradley error on the next point tied the score at 24-24, but Thompson's fifth kill of the set put BU back in front 25-24.  Barnes, who had six kills in the second, tied it up at 25-25 with a Loyola kill and the Ramblers had a 26-25 advantage after a block.  A Bradley error capped a 27-25 Loyola win.  Thompson had five kills and six digs in the second to pace the Braves.

Bradley trailed for a bulk of the third set, but managed to stay within striking distance and trailed 20-18 after a Poore kill.  A 4-0 Rambler spurt gave Loyola control, however.  Back-to-back Bradley errors pushed the Rambler lead to 22-18 and consecutive kills from Heather Kocken gave Loyola match point at 24-18.  Freshman Raeann Bergman slammed home a kill on an overpass and a Loyola error on the next point cut the Rambler lead to 24-20.  A Taylor Venuto block was the final point of the night, giving Loyola the third set 25-20 to complete the sweep.

For the second consecutive night, sophomore Hailey Delacher finished a dig short of collecting a double-double (13 assists & nine digs).  Poore had six kills and three blocks, while Bergman tallied a match-high six blocks one night removed from a season-best seven-block effort Friday against Valparaiso.

The Braves open a season-long, four-match road swing Friday with a 6 p.m. match at Missouri State.
