Volleyball Picks Up Road Sweep At SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Sophomore Hannah Thompson and Rachel Pranger each turned in double-doubles to help power Bradley Volleyball to a 25-23, 25-23, 25-19 road sweep of Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon at Davies Gym.

Thompson had 12 kills and a match-high 22 digs for her 17th double-double of the year, while Pranger added 11 kills and 21 digs to pick up her eighth double-double of the season. In addition, sophomore Kat Poore had nine kills on 20 swings without an error, while junior Sara Maddox chipped in with eight kills. Senior Hannah Angeli played her first match since an injury in the MVC opener against SIU back on Sept. 27 to collect 13 assists, three aces and four digs in the final two sets.

Bradley (10-11 overall, 6-4 MVC) had to use a late push to take the opening set 25-23. Southern Illinois (12-13 overall, 4-7 MVC) led 23-22 on an Emma Baalman kill to force the Braves to call their final timeout of the frame. Thompson had her fourth kill of the set out of the timeout to tie things up at 23-23 and a Poore kill gave BU set point at 24-23. Pranger, who had two kills, nine digs and three blocks in the first set, sealed the 25-23 win with an ace.

Southern Illinois jumped out to an early lead in the second set, building a 9-4 advantage before the Braves were able to rally. Bradley managed to pull within one at 12-11, but SIU managed to hang on to the lead until late. The Braves eventually pulled even at 20-20 on a Thompson kill and freshman Raeann Bergman gave BU a 21-20 edge with a kill of her own. A SIU error made it a two-point Bradley lead 22-20 and the Braves later held set point at 24-21 after a Serena Sparks' ace. The Salukis managed to pull within one at 24-23, only to have Thompson cap another 25-23 win for the Braves with her eighth kill of the night.

Bradley took control of the third set with a 6-0 run to take an 8-5 lead with Angeli serving up a pair of aces during the spurt. The BU lead ballooned to seven on a Thompson kill at 20-13. The Braves later had match point at 24-17 on a Pranger kill and she closed out a 25-19 third-set win for BU with her 11th kill of the evening.

The victory was Bradley's third consecutive road win in the series with Southern Illinois as the Braves topped the Salukis for the fourth time in the last five matchups.

Bradley continues a season-long, four-match road swing Friday with a 6 p.m. match at I-74 rival Illinois State.
