Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Four Braves turned in double-doubles with Rachel Pranger notching 18 kills and 14 digs sophomore Hannah Thompson turning in her school record 13th consecutive double-double to help power Bradley Volleyball to an 18-25, 25-21, 26-24, 11-25, 15-10 victory over I-74 rival Illinois State Friday night at Renaissance Coliseum.

Bradley (7-8 overall, 3-1 MVC) picked up its second straight victory in the series with the Redbirds (9-7 overall, 2-2 MVC) after sweeping Illinois State in the final home match of the 2018 campaign as the Braves pick up back-to-back wins in the series for the first time since winning three consecutive contests vs. ISU between the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Pranger finished one kill short of tying a career high, collecting 18 kills to go with her 14 digs.  Thompson paced Bradley's defensive efforts with 21 digs in addition to tallying 10 kills as she broke the Bradley record for consecutive double-doubles of 12 by Samantha Hardwick in 2000.

Setters Hailey Delacher and Carlee Camlin both had double-doubles of their own as well.  Delacher turned in her fourth of the season (21 assists & 12 digs), while Camlin had the first of her Bradley career (25 assists & 14 digs).

Coming off a season-high 13 kills Monday at Indiana State, freshman Karagan Coggin slammed home 12 kills, including the final point in the fifth set to seal the victory.

Bradley hit .344 in the first set, but the Braves had trouble keeping up with a hot-hitting Illinois State squad which owned a .459 attack percentage in the opener.  The Redbirds never trailed in the first, taking the opening stanza 25-18 behind five kills each from Taylor Lynch, Sarah Kushner and Kaylee Martin.

Pranger took over for Bradley in the second set, notching six kills on 14 attacks without an error and helped the Braves hit .317 in the frame.  Despite the strong offensive attack in the second, Bradley needed a late rally to even the match.  Illinois State held a 19-18 advantage when Coggin was part of back-to-back blocks to spark a 3-0 Bradley spurt to give BU a 21-19 edge.  With the Braves leading 22-21, a Coggin kill made it a two-point cushion at 23-21 and a block by freshman Raeann Bergman and sophomore Kat Poore gave Bradley set point at 24-21.  An Illinois State error closed out a 25-21 BU win.

The third set was another back-and-forth affair with the Braves once again using a late push.  Bradley led 21-18 only to have the Redbirds pull even at 21-21.  Coggin, who had four kills in the third, broke the tie with a kill and a Redbird error gave the Braves a 23-21 advantage.  Coggin later gave BU set point (24-22) with another kill, but Illinois State's Martin answered with back-to-back kills of her own to tie the score at 24-24.  Bradley once again held set point at 25-24 after a Pranger kill and Bergman sealed a 26-24 win for the Braves with her fourth kill of the set.

Illinois State used an early 10-0 run to take control of the fourth set and the Redbirds cruised to a 25-11 win to force the deciding fifth set.

Thompson had a kill and ace early in the fifth to help Bradley jump out to a 4-2 lead.  Illinois State managed to pull even at 6-6, only to give the Braves the lead with a service error.  Thompson followed with a kill and junior Sara Maddox teamed with Bergman for a block to give Bradley a 9-6 lead.  Junior Emma Raleigh later pushed the Bradley lead to four (11-7) with an ace to spark a 3-0 BU spurt which included a Coggin kill and ISU error.  Three of Bradley's final five points came on Coggin kills, with the freshman giving the Braves match point at 14-8 with her 11th kill of the evening and she later buried another kill as the Braves took the set 15-10.

Illinois State had five players in double figures in kills, led by Martin's match-high 19 kills.

Bradley plays six of the next eight matches on the road, kicking off a two-match road swing Friday, Oct. 11 at Northern Iowa (6 p.m.).
