Game Recap: Volleyball |
NORMAL, Ill. – Hannah Thompson celebrated her birthday in a big way with the sophomore collecting a season-high 19 kills to go with 23 digs as she helped power Bradley Volleyball to a 25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 15-10 victory at I-74 rival Illinois State Friday.

The victory gave Bradley (11-11 overall, 7-4 MVC) sole possession of third place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings at 7-4.  In addition, the Braves swept the regular-season series from the Redbirds (13-9 overall, 6-5 MVC) for the first time since 2001 with the team's first road win in the series dating back to the 2002 campaign.

Thompson was one of three Bradley players with double-doubles, collecting her 18th of the year to join Bradley Hall of Fame members Jenny Pavlas and Sam Hardwick as the only players in program history to have two seasons with 18 or more double-doubles.

Fellow sophomore Rachel Pranger added 13 kills and 11 digs, while Carlee Camlin had 28 assists and 11 digs.

In the first set, Bradley jumped out to a 5-1 lead thanks in part to a pair of kills by Sara Maddox.  The BU lead was 9-5 when Illinois State was forced to use its first timeout of the frame.  Back-to-back blocks by Lida Kastanou and Raeann Bergman later highlighted a 3-0 BU spurt which gave the Braves a 20-16 edge.  The Redbirds answered with three straight points, however, to pull within one again at 20-19.

Kastanou had a kill out of the timeout and the combo of Bergman and Maddox teamed for a block to push the advantage back to three (22-19).  With the Braves holding a 23-22 edge, Thompson came up with a big kill to give BU set point and the third kill of the set from Maddox capped a 25-22 win for the Braves.

Bradley had a 7-0 run early in the second set to take a lead and had a 15-8 advantage midway through the stanza.  Illinois State chipped away at the BU advantage and trimmed what was once a 21-14 lead for the Braves to one (22-21) with a 7-1 run.  Freshman Karagan Coggin ended a 5-0 ISU spurt with a kill to push the lead back to two (23-21).  Illinois State answered with a kill of its own, only to have Kastanou give Bradley set point at 24-22 with a kill.  Thompson, who had six kills and eight digs in the second, gave the Braves a 25-22 win with her eighth kill of the night.  Bradley hit .372 in the second set victory.

Illinois State managed to use a late push in the third set to avoid the sweep.  Bradley led 17-16 following a Kastanou kill, but the Redbirds answered with six consecutive points to go in front 22-17.  Pranger stopped the run with a kill only to have the Redbirds rattle off three more points to take the set 25-18.

Bradley found itself in an early hole in the fourth after Illinois State used a 7-1 run to take an 8-2 lead.  The Braves cut the deficit to two (8-6) thanks to kills by Maddox and Coggin, an Angeli ace and block by Coggin and Kastanou.  Another 4-0 ISU spurt quickly pushed the Redbird lead to 12-6 and the Braves got no closer than five points down the stretch as ISU took the set 25-17 to force a deciding fifth set.

Thompson helped key a 5-0 Bradley run in the fifth with a kill and block.  Angeli capped the spurt with her fourth ace of the night to give the Braves an 8-5 lead.  Illinois State managed to cut the advantage to one at 9-8 before Pranger had a kill.  With Bradley holding a 12-10 lead, Coggin buried an overpass to give the Braves a 13-10 edge and BU held match point following an ISU error.  Thompson's third kill of the fifth was the final point of the night as Bradley took the fifth 15-10 to claim its first road win in the series since 2002.

Bradley closes out a four-match road swing Monday with a 6 p.m. match at Evansville.
