Braves Win Third-Straight, Defeat Norfolk State

Peoria, Ill. – Five Braves scored in double figures as the Bradley men's basketball team earned its third-straight victory with a 69-57 win against Norfolk State on Tuesday night. With the win in the first game of the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off, BU improves to 3-1 on the season, while the Spartans drop to 3-2.
 
Senior Koch Bar led Bradley with 15 points and eight rebounds – pacing an attack that feature five double-digit scorers for the third time this season. Senior Darrell Brown added 13 points and a game-high eight assists, while senior Nate Kennell and junior Elijah Childs both chipped in 11 points apiece.
 
Kennell also collected four assists with no turnovers on the night, while sophomore Ja'Shon Henry added a spark off the bench with his third double-digit scoring day in as many games this season. The sophomore had an all-around contest with 10 points, seven boards, three blocks and two assists in the winning effort.
 
The schools played a tight first half but it was a late run that gave Bradley the intermission lead. Trailing by four, 27-23, BU outscored Norfolk State, 11-3 over the final four minutes to head into the locker room with a 34-30 edge. Junior Danya Kingsby scored six of his seven points on the night during the stretch to give Bradley the halftime lead.
 
The Braves never trailed in the second 20 minutes of play but Norfolk State made BU work for it as the advantage bounced between two and nine points for most of the half. With a two-point lead with just over five minutes remaining, the Braves used an 9-2 run to push their advantage up to nine, 62-53. Kennell sunk a pair of 3-point buckets sandwiched around an alley-oop from Henry as Bradley never trailed by less than seven the remainder of the game en route to the 12-point victory.
 
Bradley finished the game shooting 42.1 percent in the winning effort, including a 50.0 percent clip in the second half. The Braves also recorded 19 assists to just 12 turnovers, while forcing Norfolk State into 18 turnovers and 40.4 percent shooting.
 
The Braves wrap up their four-game homestand on Friday night, welcoming Radford to Carver Arena. Tipoff in the second game of the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off is set for 6 p.m.
 
Game Notes: With his 13 points, Brown moved into 18th place all-time in scoring at Bradley with 1,420 career points – passing James Gillingham (1,416) and Al Smith (1,408) … Henry has three double-digit games in as many contests this season after recording three all of his rookie campaign … Brown has recorded at least five assists in all four games and is now averaging 7.3 per game … Bradley shot 23 free throws to 15 for Norfolk State, marking the 14th-straight victory for BU when attempting more at the charity stripe … The schools were meeting for the first time.
