Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Peoria, Ill. – Senior Nate Kennell poured in a season-best 20 points to lead the Bradley men's basketball team to a 70-61 victory against Radford on Friday night in the second game of the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off. The Braves won their fourth-straight game to improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Highlanders drop to 2-3 this season.

Kennell made 8-of-13 field goals in the winning effort, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, to go with three steals, three boards and two assists. Classmate Darrell Brown added 14 points and five assists on the night.

Junior Elijah Childs and senior Koch Bar led the Braves on the glass with 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively. Overall, Bradley outrebounded the visitors by a 38-25 margin, collecting 16 offensive boards to just 14 defensive rebounds for Radford.

Kennell was hot right from the start, scoring the team's first seven points of the night as Bradley raced to a 7-2 lead and never gave the advantage back. Radford would pull as close as four midway through the first half, 23-19, but the Braves quickly put their lead to double-digits with a 9-0 run. Kennell ignited the spurt with a 3-pointer to go with four points from Childs and two from Ja'Shon Henry for the 32-19 lead. The Braves then headed into the locker room with a 10-point advantage, 37-27.

In the second 20 minutes of play, Kennell picked up right where he left off with Brown also joining in to stretch the Bradley advantage. The duo combined to score 14 of the team's first 16 points of the half as BU claimed a 15-point lead, 53-38. The advantage would reach as many as 17 points, 59-42, midway through the half only for the Highlanders to chip away and eventually pull within five, 64-59, with 3:04 remaining in the contest. Brown then came up with his biggest shot of the night, sinking a deep 3-pointer to put Bradley back in front by eight en route to the 70-61 victory.

Bradley shot a season-best 49.0 percent in the winning effort, while holding Radford to 42.0 percent shooting and just 4-of-19 from 3-point range (21.1 percent).

The Braves now travel to Florida to continue play in the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off. Bradley squares off with in-state foe Northwestern on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. CT with the game airing live on FS1.

Game Notes: With his 14 points, Brown moved into 17th place in school history with 1,434 career points, passing Jim Caruthers (had 1,425 points from 1972 to 1976) … Brown is the first Brave with five-plus assists in five-straight games since Daniel Ruffin during the 2007-08 season … Bradley entered the game ranked ninth nationally by collecting 15.8 offensive boards per game before its 16-board performance on Friday … The Braves ended a nine-game losing streak when their opponents shoot more free throws as Radford attempted 26 to Bradley's 25 on Friday … Teams are shooting just 25.2 percent from 3-point range against BU this season … The schools were meeting for the first time.
