Junior forward Elijah Childs of the Bradley men's basketball team was named to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List, announced on Wednesday. The award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player.

Childs is coming off a season where he lifted the Braves to their first Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship in 31 years. A third-team All-Valley selection, Childs was second on the team as a sophomore with 12.4 points, while leading BU with 7.8 rebounds and 50 total blocks.

The forward was named Arch Madness Most Outstanding Player during Bradley's postseason run – averaging 12.7 points in the three MVC victories (10.0 in the second half) – before registering 19 points, six rebounds and three blocks against No. 5 Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament.

In Bradley's season opener at Saint Joseph's on Tuesday, Childs scored 11 points to go with five rebounds and two blocks.

The award honors Henson, the former Illinois and New Mexico State coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.  Henson is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989.

Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams have made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.

The 2019-20 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced in April 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia – site of the men's Division I NCAA Basketball Championship.

Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.

Childs and Bradley return to action on Saturday night, hosting IUPUI in the team's home opener. First tip at Carver Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
