Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
CONWAY, AR – Junior shortstop Luke Shadid was 3-for-5, sophomore designated hitter Eli Rawlinson had a pair of run-scoring extra-base hits and senior reliever Cole Cook struck out nine in 5.0 scoreless innings of relief, leading Bradley (1-0) to a 5-2 win at Central Arkansas (0-1) in the opening game of the 2019 college baseball season Friday afternoon at Bear Stadium.

Friday's result was Bradley's first season-opening win since 2015 and marked the first time the Braves won a true road game to start a season since 2014, when they ended up sweeping a 3-game series at Alcorn State.

Bradley fell behind early after UCA, which was 32-25 in 2018, capitalized on back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the third against Braves starter Mitch Janssen.  After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Bears DH Marco Navarro brought the runs home with a single to left center.

The Braves had an immediate answer, however, plating four runs in the top of the fourth against UCA starter Cody Davenport (L 0-1).  Junior 3B Brendan Dougherty started the rally with a leadoff triple.  Andy Shadid followed with a walk, before Rawlinson drove home Bradley's first run of the year with a RBI double.  Junior LF Dan Bolt plated Shadid with a ground out to pull the Braves even, 2-2.

After Jean-Francois Garon struck out and Keaton Rice was hit by a pitch, first baseman Nic Anderson hit a ground ball to that the Bears' second baseman could not handle, extending the inning while allowing Rawlinson to score.  Second baseman Nick McMurray walked to load the bases and Luke Shadid completed the 4-run uprising with a RBI single to left field.

Cook (W 1-0) entered the game in the fifth inning after Janssen issued his fifth walk of the day to open the frame.  Cook got out of the jam with two strikeouts around a fly out, setting the tone for the remainder of his day.   He went on to scatter five hits in his 5.0 shutout innings, but did not allow a walk.

While UCA reliever Brad Verel held the Braves in check in his 5.0 innings of relief, Rawlinson did touch him for a solo home run in the eighth inning to add a bit of insurance.

The teams will continue their weekend series with 1 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday at Bear Stadium.  Sophomore LHP Brooks Gosswein is expected to start Saturday's game on the mound for the Braves, followed by senior RHP Sam Lund Sunday.
