Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Bradley couldn't recover from a slow offensive start, falling at Southern Illinois 62-55, despite the 12th double-double of the season from junior Chelsea Brackmann and 18 points off the bench from freshman Lasha Petree.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Braves (17-6 overall, 7-5 MVC), who had a chance to move into a tie with Northern Iowa for third in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with a victory.

Bradley missed its first seven shots from the field and was 1-of-18 shooting through the first 13:40 of the contest.  The Braves shot 12 percent (3-for-26) in the first half, but regrouped to shoot 42 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Despite the offensive struggles, Bradley was able to limit Southern Illinois (11-11 overall, 4-7 MVC) to just 32 percent shooting in the opening half.

The Braves made their first five shots of the third quarter and opened the period with a 12-3 run to trim what was a 10-point halftime deficit (26-16) to one at 29-28 less than four minutes into the frame. Brackmann scored six points during the BU spurt.

"We were just flat," said Bradley head coach Andrea Gorski.  "We need to figure out how to get up for these night games better.  We have to out hustle people.  SIU didn't play their best game either, but they got some three's from some kids who don't normally shoot well from the outside and they made a big difference in this game."

A three-pointer by Brittney Patrick snapped Bradley's run and SIU was able to push the lead back to eight points at 42-34 to close the third quarter.  The Braves were 7-for-11 from the field during the third quarter.

Freshman Tatum Koenig opened the scoring in the fourth with a banked in three-pointer from the wing with 8:29 left and Bradley held the Salukis scoreless for the first 3:30 of the frame.  The Braves weren't able to take advantage however, with SIU later scoring five consecutive points to take its largest lead of the game to that point at 50-39 with 4:40 left.

The deficit was 12 points 54-42 closing in on 2:30 to play when Bradley would make one last push.  Petree made a driving layup to cut it to 10 and she later had back-to-back baskets as a three-point play with 1:09 remaining pulled the Braves within six (57-51).

Bradley made just one hoop in the final minute, though and SIU made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to hang on for the 62-55 victory.

Brackmann also had two blocks and two steals in addition to her double-double as she moved her season rebounding total among the top 10 in Bradley history.  The Braves shot 28 percent overall for the night and held Southern Illinois to 35 percent shooting in the contest.

Nicole Martin paced Southern Illinois in scoring with 18 points, while Makenzie Silvey added 14 points for the Salukis and Patrick joined the pair in double figures with 10 points.

Bradley closes out a two-game road swing Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at league co-leader Missouri State.
