CONWAY, AR – Five Bradley pitchers combined on a solid mound effort, while shortstop Luke Shadid homered and drove in three runs, leading the Braves (2-0) to a 4-3 win at Central Arkansas (0-2) Saturday afternoon at Bear Stadium.

On the heels of Friday's 5-2 victory, Bradley has clinched a season-opening series victory against a UCA squad that posted a 32-25 record in 2018.  The Braves will try for the series sweep Sunday, when senior RHP Sam Lund takes the mound in the 1 p.m. finale.

Saturday's effort featured a combination of timely hitting, pitching and defense.

For the second ame in a row, UCA grabbed the early lead, only to see the Braves deliver an immediate answer.  Sophomore LHP Brooks Gosswein got off to a rough start when the Bears loaded the bases with no outs on a double and two walks.  Gosswein limited the damage to one run, though, by inducing consecutive ground balls – a run-scoring fielder's choice and an inning-ending double play.

The Braves answered by also loading the bases with no outs on consecutive singles by Keaton Rice and Jean-Francois Garon and a Nic Anderson walk.  Shadid drove in his first run of the day by drawing a one-out, bases-loaded walk and the Braves took the lead, 2-1, on a Brendan Dougherty run-scoring ground out.

Bradley used a little 2-out magic to push its lead to 4-1 in the fourth as Shadid followed a Christian Domingues 2-out double with his first home run of the year.

UCA again loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning, reaching Gosswein for a second run on a walk, single, hit by pitch and RBI fielder's choice to start the inning.  Gosswein responded with a strikeout for the second out in the inning, before Tyler Smith's 2-out, RBI single ended his day.

With Bradley clinging to the 4-3 lead with runners at first and second and two outs in the fifth, Jed Moscot made his Bradley debut in relief of Gosswein.  From his backstop position, Rice helped Moscot out of the jam, though, by picking off Smith at first base to end the inning.  The Braves got another defensive gem in the sixth:  after Moscot issued a leadoff walk, the runner was erased on a non-traditional, 7-3 double play as left fielder Eli Rawlinson came up with the big play.

After Gosswein allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in his 4.2 innings, Moscot followed with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, surrendering on hit and one walk with three strikeouts.  The one hit was a 1-out double in the eighth inning.  DJ DiPiero relieved after the 2-bagger and induced a fielder's choice out for the second out of the eighth, before Matthew Richey got a strikeout to end the threat.  Fifth-year senior Alan Beer returned to the mound after redshirting the 2018 campaign and he retired UCA in order in the ninth on a fly out and two strikeouts to earn the save.

Bradley finished the game with a 6-5 edge in hits.  Senior CF Andy Shadid was 2-for-4 with a double as the game's only player to record multiple hits.
