Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
CLARKSVILLE, TN – Senior CF Andy Shadid delivered a 2-out, 2-run single in the 10th inning, leading Bradley (3-1) to a 5-3 win at Austin Peay (0-4) during the opening day of the 8-team Mule Mix Classic Thursday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The Braves took the game's first lead when junior LF Dan Bolt smoked a 1-out home run down the left field line for his second round tripper of the year.

After Bradley starter Jed Moscot cruised through the first four innings, Austin Peay touched him for two runs in the fifth when SS Bobby Head followed a David Martinez walk with a 2-out home run to left.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Braves pulled even in the sixth on 2B Nick McMurray's 2-out bunt single with runners on the corners.  Bradley then reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the seventh on DH Eli Rawlinson's second home run of the year.

Matthew Richey relieved Moscot to start the sixth inning and pitched a perfect frame with two strikeouts, before giving way to Cole Cook in the seventh.  The Governors took advantage of Martinez's leadoff double, scoring the tying run on Spain's infield single before Cook got out of 1-out jam without any further damage by getting a strikeout and pop out.

The Braves had an opportunity to break the game open in the ninth, loading the bases on a Brendan Dougherty leadoff single, Rawlinson 1-out walk and Keaton Rice 2-out hit by pitch, but Austin Peay's seventh pitcher of the game, Brett Newberg, caught LF Jean-Francois Garon looking to end the inning.

Given a second chance, the Braves came through in the 10th.  McMurray got the go-ahead rally started by dumping a 1-out single into left field and then took second on a wild pitch.  Luke Shadid was intentionally walked and Dougherty advanced the runners with a ground out, Andy Shadid drove home both runners with a single to center field.

Fifth-year senior RHP Allan Beer relieved Cook to start the bottom of the 10th and blew through the first two hitters with back-to-back strikeouts.  Things got interesting from there, however, as the Governors used consecutive infield singles and a 4-pitch walk to load the bases.  Pinch-hitter Alex Sala fouled off a pair of 2-strike pitches while working the count full, but Beer came through with his third strikeout of the inning to nail down his second save of the season.  Beer now is the fourth pitcher in Bradley history to record at least 10 career saves.

By allowing one run on four hits in his 3.0 innings, Cook earned the win and improved to 2-0 on the young season.  Newberg (0-2) started the game at DH for the Govs, but suffered the loss by allowing the two 10th-inning runs.

The Braves are scheduled to continue play in the Mule Mix Classic by visiting Belmont Friday (4 p.m.), Lipscomb Saturday (2 p.m.) and Middle Tennessee State Sunday (1 p.m.).  Thursday's game was bumped up two hours, however, as rain is expected to it the area for the next couple of days.  Game schedule updates will be posted online at BradleyBraves.com and via the team's Twitter handle, @BradleyBaseball.
