Game Recap: Softball |
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Sophomore Stacia Seeton hit a three-run double in the top of the fifth and freshman Samantha Smith drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to help Bradley Softball rally for a 4-3 victory over South Alabama Saturday afternoon at the Citrus Classic.

Bradley (8-10 overall) struggled early against South Alabama starter Alexis Reid, with the Braves collecting two singles in the first four innings.

Reid and South Alabama (9-9 overall) were staked to an early lead with the Jaguars scoring a run in the bottom of the first, scoring the first run of the contest on a Kamdyn Kvistad RBI single.

South Alabama added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to build a 3-0 advantage.  Taylor Stevens singled to open the inning and came around to score on a one-out single by Megan Harris.  Kvistad, who went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Jaguars, drove in another run later in the inning with a two-out single to right.

Bradley finally got to Reid in the top of the fifth.  Freshman Grace French had a one-out single and the Braves loaded the bases with two outs on singles by freshman Lucy Mead and senior Gabby Stoner.  Seeton tied the game at 3-3 with a bases clearing double to left center.

Senior Megan Mahaffy, who came on in relief of Bradley starter Julie Kestas in the fourth, sat South Alabama down in order in both the fifth and sixth as the teams went to the seventh knotted at 3-3.

The Jaguars were able to erase seventh inning singles by Mead and Stoner with a double-play and would try to push the game winner across in the bottom half.  A one-out single by Kvistad and two-out walk to Victoria Ortiz put a pair of runners on.  Mahaffy got a groundout to end the threat however, as the Braves went to extra innings for the first time this spring.

Using the international tie-breaker, pinch runner Brooklyn Bane opened the top of the eighth on second and moved to third on a one-out South Alabama error.  Bane would later score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left by Smith to give Bradley a 4-3 lead.

South Alabama had the tying run at third with only one out after a sacrifice bunt in the bottom half of the eighth.  A popout and flyout ended the inning, however, as Bradley rallied for the 4-3 victory.

Mahaffy pitched 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, holding the Jaguars to just two hits and evened her record at 2-2 with the victory.

Bradley closes out play at the Citrus Classic Sunday with a 10:30 a.m. (CST) game against Savannah State.
