OVERLAND PARK, KS – Bradley center fielder Andy Shadid (Peoria, IL/Notre Dame H.S.) is one of 30 national candidates under consideration for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate baseball, according to an announcement from the award organizers Friday.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot.  Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to the media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition.  The Senior CLASS Award winner in baseball will be announced during the 2019 College World Series® in June.

The only Missouri Valley Conference player listed among the 2019 baseball candidates, Shadid becomes the third Bradley student-athlete recognized as a Senior CLASS Award candidate this school year, following volleyball Erica Haslag and men's basketball player Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye.  He also becomes the fourth Bradley Baseball player recognized as one of 30 national candidates, following Eitan Barbalat in 2008 (finalist), Grant Escue in 2009 (finalist) and Mike Tauchman in 2013 (candidate).

CLASSROOM
Shadid earned his undergraduate degree in three years, graduating in May 2018 with his bachelor's degree in finance, while adding a double minor in management & leadership and management information systems.  He graduated cum laude, boasting a 3.56 cumulative GPA.  He currently is pursuing a master's degree in business administration and is expected to complete his MBA in May.

A Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First-Team pick in 2018, Shadid has qualified for the MVC Honor Roll in each of his first three years and the Bradley Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his first seven semesters.  He also received the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in 2017.

CHARACTER
A member of the Bradley Athletics Braves Council (student-athlete advisory board) the last two years, Shadid was one of two student-athletes from the entire league selected to represent the Missouri Valley Conference at the 2017 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C.  The 350 student-athletes from schools at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III levels from across the nation who participate in the NCAA Leadership Forum are selected based on their influence on their respective campuses and communities and the diversity of their experiences.

In her nomination letter for the NCAA Leadership Form on Shadid's behalf, Bradley Coordinator of Academics and Student-Athlete Services Pam Miller indicated "he is one of the kindest, most-appreciative and respectful student-athletes she has known, while serving as a great leader to his baseball team and all of Bradley Athletics."

COMMUNITY
Among his volunteer activities, Shadid co-chaired Bradley Baseball's 2018 fundraising efforts on behalf of the vs. Cancer Foundation, helping the Braves raise more than $10,000 for the foundation in the fight against childhood cancer. In addition to his activities on behalf of the Braves Council to support the Megan C. Fong Blood and Bone Marrow Drive, Shadid assisted with the 2018 Soldier Dash 5K Obstacle Course Race and he has visited with patients at Children's Hospital of Illinois.

COMPETITION
A 2016 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, Shadid is a two-time (2017, 2018) All-Missouri Valley Conference honorable mention selection.  He has played in 167 of Bradley's 168 games during his four seasons, including 166 as the starting centerfielder.  Also a two-time (2016, 2018) selection for the MVC All-Defense Team, Shadid has made two appearances at No. 4 in ESPN SportsCenter Top Plays for his diving catches.  Bradley's team MVP and batting champion (.326) in 2018, Shadid has won the team's Kirby Puckett Gold Glove in each of his first three seasons.  He enters Saturday's game as the team's active leader with 102 career RBI's and 17 home runs, a total aided by his 4-game home run streak in 2016.
