PEORIA, IL – One team's base hit to right field with runners at first and second resulted in an out at the plate, while the other's turned into the game's only run.  In a game that saw both teams collect just three hits, Evansville (12-9, 1-0 MVC) got the RBI single in the sixth inning to earn a 1-0 win against Bradley (12-8, 0-1 MVC) in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Dozer Park.

After a pair of 2-out walks in the bottom of the third inning, Bradley freshman 1B Connor O'Brien hit a sharp single into right field, but Evansville's Troy Beilsmith fielded the ball cleanly on one hop and threw Eli Rawlinson out at the plate to end the inning.

Beilsmith started the sixth inning with a single through the left side of the Bradley infield and he scored the game's only run two batters later when Tanner Craig dropped a soft, 1-out single into right field.

Both O'Brien and Craig finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate.  Beilsmith had Evansville's only other hit off the Bradley pitching combo of Mitch Janssen (L 1-1) and Cole Cook, while late-inning substitute Christian Dominguez had Bradley's only other base hit.

Dominguez led off the eighth with a single to left field and took second on a Luke Shadid sacrifice bunt.  But after Brendan Dougherty walked and Dan Bolt struck out, Evansville closer Austin Allinger entered the game and got Jean-Francois Garon to foul out to end the threat.

The teams are scheduled to continue their 3-game, weekend series with a 2 p.m. start Saturday at Dozer Park.

Notes:  Friday's result was the first collegiate game to end in a 1-0 score at Dozer Park since Wichita State earned a 1-0 victory against the Braves Mary 20, 2011 … Luke Shadid, who entered the game leading the Valley in batting at .414 and was 22-for-40 (.522) during his 9-game hitting streak, saw the streak end with an 0-for-3 day … Bradley's pitching staff extended its streak of consecutive games allowing no more than one earned run to four games … The teams combined for more foul pop outs (eight) than base hits (six), including five foul outs by the Aces … Despite allowing just one run on three hits in his 5.1 innings, lowering his season ERA to 1.80, Janssen suffered the tough-luck loss … Bradley reliever Cole Cook lowered his ERA to 1.47 by tossing 3.2 scoreless and hitless innings.
