Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – Bradley senior RHP Mitch Janssen allowed just three hits in his first career complete game and senior CF Andy Shadid blasted a 3-run home run, leading the Braves (20-10, 1-3 MVC) to their eighth consecutive victory, an 8-0 romp versus Southern Illinois (17-13, 1-3 MVC) in the opening game of their Missouri Valley Conference weekend series Friday night at Dozer Park.

Bradley is unbeaten in April and its current 8-game winning streak is the team's longest since a similar 8-gamer from April 13-25, 2018.  The team's 7-game winning streak at Dozer Park, however, matches Bradley's longest in its 17 years playing in the downtown Peoria stadium, first achieved from April 23-29, 2008.

Janssen (W 3-1) had never gone more than 6.2 innings in any of his previous 48 career appearances, including 31 starts, but breezed through the SIU lineup Friday night while lowering his season earned run average to 1.18.  Janssen needed just 97 pitches, finishing with six strikeouts and no walks Friday.  After giving up a 1-out double in the first inning, he retired the next 12 Saluki batters and did not allow more than one base runner in any of his nine innings (three total).

The Braves got all the offense they needed on Dan Bolt's RBI triple in the first inning, but broke the game open by plating four unearned runs in the third and three more runs in the fourth, all against SIU starter Dylan Givens (L 3-4).  After Connor O'Brien reached on a 2-out, run-scoring error in the fourth for a 2-0 lead, Shadid delivered the big blow with a mammoth, 3-run home run that landed on the left field picnic patio and bounced over Dozer Park's exterior netting and onto Jefferson Street.  O'Brien added a 2-run single in the fourth inning.

The remaining series schedule has been altered by inclement weather in the Sunday forecast.  The final two games now will be played as part of a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Dozer Park.

Notes:  Janssen's effort helped Bradley lower its national-leading team ERA to 2.02 … The Braves completed a team cycle in the sixth inning, when Luke Shadid led off with a double to right field … The Valley's leading hitter entering the game, Luke Shadid finished 1-for-2 to open his average to .370, but he reached base four times in total thanks to two hit-by-pitches and a walk … Shadid also leads The Valley in runs produced per game and his two runs scored Friday pushed his season average to 1.73 runs scored and driven in per game.
