PEORIA, IL – Entering Friday night's I-74 Rivalry series opener at Bradley, Illinois State owned just one, 1-0 victory in the 222 games it had played against Bradley.  The Redbirds (29-20, 11-5) earned their second such victory Friday night as Brent Hendrick and Colton Johnson combined on a 5-hit shutout to blank the rival Braves (29-15, 9-7 MVC) in the opening game of a key Missouri Valley Conference series Friday night at Dozer Park.

Bradley ace Mitch Janssen (L 4-2) suffered the hard-luck loss for the Braves, falling in a 1-0 decision for the second time this season.  Janssen allowed one run on John Rave's third-inning home run in 5.2 innings, while striking out eight.  He entered the night eighth nationally in earned run average and saw his mark rise slightly to 1.47, though Friday's start was his fifth of six Valley outings without allowing more than one run.  Janssen's six Valley starts this year all have resulted in 1-run decisions:  a 1-0 loss to Evansville March 29, an 8-0 win April 12 against Southern Illinois, a 2-1 win April 19 at Dallas Baptist, a 10-9 win April 26 at Missouri State, a 2-1 win May 3 against Valparaiso and Friday's 1-0 loss.

Headrick (W 7-3) was up to the challenge in Friday's night head-to-head matchup against Janssen.  The Illinois State lefty limited the Braves to five singles and one walk in his 8.0 innings.  The Braves put a runner on base in seven straight innings from the second through the eighth, including five times with their leadoff batter, but managed to get those runners as far as third base just once and never managed to get two on base in any inning.

After Headrick threw 102 pitches through his 8.0 innings, Johnson struck out all three Braves he faced in the ninth to record his second save of the season.

Brendan Dougherty (2-for-4) and Eli Rawlinson (2-for-3) both finished with multiple hits for the Braves, while junior LF Dan Bolt was 1-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 22 consecutive games.

The teams will continue their weekend series with another 6 p.m. start Saturday at Dozer Park.  Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale will represent the final home game for 13 Bradley seniors, who will be honored in a pregame ceremony slated to begin at 12:15 at Dozer Park.
