PEORIA, IL – Bradley senior pitcher Sam Lund tossed 6.1 scoreless innings and senior RF Jean-Francois Garon drove in what proved to be the deciding run as Bradley (30-16) salvaged the final game of its weekend series versus I-74 rival Illinois State (30-21) in the final home game of the 2019 season Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park.

After posting a 32-19 record last season, Bradley now has won 30 games in consecutive seasons for the first time since a 5-year run of 30-win seasons from 1992-96.

Making the final home start of his 2-year Bradley career, Lund (W 5-3) blanked Illinois State on four hits with one walk, while striking out five.

The Braves took their first lead of series in the fourth inning when 3B Brendan Dougherty drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Garon sacrifice bunt and scored on LF Dan Bolt's single to right field.  The walk extended Dougherty's on-base streak to 20 consecutive games, while Bolt extended his on-base streak to a team season-best 24 consecutive games.

Bradley made the most of a leadoff error in the fifth inning, breaking the game open with four runs in the inning.  Junior SS Luke Shadid delivered a RBI single for a 2-0 lead, then scored the deciding run two batters later on Garon's RBI single.  Freshman 1B Connor O'Brien delivered the big blow in the inning with a 2-out, 2-run double for a 5-0 lead.

Shadid provided some insurance in the sixth with a 2-run home run.  Bradley's leadoff hitter all year, Shadid finished 2-for-4 with the home run, three RBI's and two runs scored.  He tied Bolt for the team lead with his ninth homer and joined older brother Andy Shadid in the single-season 40 RBI club.  Andy leads the team with 41 runs batted in, followed closely by Luke's 40 RBI.

In addition to Lund and Garon, two more Bradley seniors played in their final game at Dozer Park Saturday.  Second baseman Nick McMurray was 0-for-1 with a walk, a sacrifice and a run scored. While Andy Shadid was 0-for-3 at the plate, he did draw a walk and made the game-ending catch in center field, where he has started 196 games in his 4-year career, the fifth-most games started by any player in Bradley Baseball history.

The Braves pulled back to within two games of league co-leaders Illinois State and Dallas Baptist heading into the final series of the regular season.  Bradley, which is tied for fourth in the league standings with Evansville, will visit Indiana State for a 3-game series beginning Thursday night.   Evansville will visit Illinois State for a 3-game set, while Dallas Baptist will visit Southern Illinois.  Bradley, Dallas Baptist, Evansville, Illinois State and Indiana State all remain in the chase for the MVC regular-season title, but one of the five  teams is going to finish as the No. 5 seed and face a single-elimination play-in game to open the MVC Tournament May 21-25 at Illinois State.
