Season Ends in MVC Tourney First Round

Southern Illinois scored the game's final three runs to upset Bradley in the first round of the MVC Baseball Championship

NORMAL, IL – Southern Illinois first baseman J.T. Weber was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and the Salukis pushed across seven runs against Bradley's top three pitchers, using a 7-4 victory to advance to the six-team, double-elimination portion of the bracket in the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship Tuesday night at Illinois State's Duffy Bass Field.
 
The fifth-seeded Braves (31-19) season comes to an end, while the Salukis will face tournament host Illinois State in Wednesday's 3 p.m. game.
 
Senior RHP Mitch Janssen entered Tuesday's start ranked 18th nationally with a 1.94 season earned run average, but allowed four runs, two earned, on two hits and five walks in his 4.2 innings.  Senior LHP Cole Cook, who entered 19th nationally with a 1.95 ERA surrendered SIU's go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Salukis scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth against Bradley closer Theron Denlinger.
 
Bradley loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning against reliever Trey McDaniel, but the Salukis closer fanned Luke Shadid and Brendan Dougherty to end the game.
 
The Braves took the game's first lead with two runs in the third inning.  Christian Dominguez started a 2-out rally in the third with Bradley's first base hit and came home on a Luke Shadid RBI triple.  Shadid then scored on a Brad Harrison wild pitch.
 
The Salukis had the answer in the fourth, taking advantage of a leadoff error and a pair of walks in the inning.  SIU moved ahead, 4-2, with two more runs in the fifth after Janssen's day ended by giving up a pair of 2-out walks.  Aiden McMahan delivered a RBI single off reliever Brian Schrimmer and Grey Epps added a sac fly.
 
Bradley pulled into a 4-4 tie in the sixth on a Connor O'Brien RBI ground out and Andy Shadid run-scoring single.  Weber led off the eighth with a double and scored on a Philip Archer single to put the Salukis in front for good.

Rawlinson led Bradley's 8-hit effort by going 2-for-3 with a walk.
