PEORIA, IL – Bradley senior Mitch Janssen continued his mastery on the mound, recording a career-best 11 strikeouts while leading the Braves (28-13, 8-5 MVC) to a 2-1 win against Valparaiso (9-30, 2-11 MVC) Friday afternoon at Dozer Park.

Janssen (4-1) scattered seven hits in his 7.0 innings, allowing one first-inning run with one walk to go along with his 11 strikeouts.  His previous high was 10 strikeouts against Missouri State April 28, 2018.  He entered Friday's game 11th nationally in earned run average and lowered his season ERA to 1.45 in his 13 appearances, including 1.47 in his five Missouri Valley Conference starts.  Four of those five Valley starts have resulted in one-run decisions and he has a shutout in the other.

Junior LF Dan Bolt provided the offense for the Braves, drilling a RBI triple high off the right center field wall and then coming in with the deciding run on freshman 1B Connor O'Brien's single to left center.  Bolt finished the day 2-for-3 by adding a double in the sixth inning, while O'Brien saw his team-leading conference batting average dip to .408 with his 1-for-3 effort.

Valparaiso pitcher Jon Tieman (L 2-8) settled in after the rocky first inning, but suffered the tough-luck loss, despite allowing just six hits with seven strikeouts in his complete-game 8.0 innings.

The Crusaders touched Janssen for their lone run in the first inning when Riley Dent smacked the first pitch of the game back up the middle for a leadoff single, advanced to second on a second-pitch sacrifice bunt and then scored on Blake Billinger's 2-out, soft flare into right field.

Valparaiso got only one more runner as far as second base against Janssen – Jake Kapers doubled with one out in the fifth and took third on a ground out before Janssen ended the inning with a strikeout, but threatened against Braves closer Theron Denlinger in the ninth.

After a first pitch fly out to start the ninth inning, Denlinger walked the next two batters on eight pitches and then loaded the bases when he hit Kapers on a 1-2 pitch with two outs.  The hard-throwing righty fanned Riley Dent, though, to end the game and nail down his sixth save.

The teams will continue their weekend Missouri Valley Conference series with another noon game Saturday at Dozer Park.
