PEORIA, IL – Bradley's first effort at winning its weekend series against Valparaiso (10-30, 3-11 MVC) did not pass without a lack of opportunities.  The Braves (28-14, 8-6 MVC) put 13 runners on base with seven hits, four walks, a hit by pitch and an error, but stranded 11 of those runners in a 5-2 loss Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park.

Despite Saturday's setback, Bradley will get a second shot at its third Missouri Valley Conference series win of the season Sunday when the teams meet in another noon game at Dozer Park.

For the second straight game, Valparaiso designated hitter Blake Billinger delivered a run-scoring hit in the top of the first inning to give the Crusaders a quick lead.  After his 2-out, bloop single Friday, Billinger ripped a 2-out, RBI double Saturday against Bradley starter Brooks Gosswein.

In similar fashion to Friday, when the Braves answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and rode those two runs to a 2-1 win, Bradley again answered in the bottom of the first Saturday.  Luke Shadid was hit by a pitch to start the inning, took third on Brendan Dougherty's single and scored on a Dan Bolt sacrifice fly.

The Braves took a 2-1 lead in the third when Nick McMurray singled, took second on Shadid's sacrifice bunt and scored on a 2-out single by Jean-Francois Garon.  The Braves went on to load the bases on consecutive walks to Bolt and Connor O'Brien, but Andy Shadid flew out to right field to end the third.

The Braves then went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings before Valpo relievers Montana Quigley and Easton Rhodehouse retired Bradley's final eight hitters in order.

The Crusaders reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning by taking advantage of a leadoff walk.  Jeremy Drudge followed with a double to put runners at second and third with no outs before Valpo used a pair of RBI ground outs to pull ahead, 3-2.  Valparaiso tacked on two more runs in the sixth after loading the bases with one out.  Bradley reliever Jed Moscot replaced Gosswein (L 4-4), but was greeted with a squeeze bunt for a base hit and a sacrifice fly before getting out of the inning.

McMurray led Bradley's 7-hit attack by going 3-for-4, while Bolt walked three times to extend his on-base streak to a team-best 20 consecutive games.  Chase Dawson(2-for-3) and Billinger (2-for-4) both collected multiple hits to lead Valparaiso's 7-hit effort.
