ST. LOUIS – Three members of the Bradley Baseball team were selected to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team, according to a vote of the league's eight baseball sports information contacts released by the league office today.

Of the league-high 15 Bradley players who qualified for MVC Scholar-Athlete consideration, senior P Cole Cook (Washington, IL/Washington HS), senior CF Andy Shadid (Peoria, IL/Notre Dame HS) and junior SS Luke Shadid (Peoria, IL/Notre Dame HS) all earned recognition on the 15-player first team.  The Shadid brothers make up half of the league's four repeat first-teamers.

The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA standards for Google Cloud Academic All-America voting.  Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.  Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.  The eight MVC baseball programs combined to nominate 49 student-athletes this year, including 15 (31 percent) from Bradley.

A Google Cloud Academic All-District 5 first team selection, Luke Shadid remains under consideration for Academic All-America.

The trio of Bradley scholar-athletes helped the Braves to a 31-19 overall record and fourth-place tie in the Missouri Valley Conference at 11-10 in league play this season. The Braves secured consecutive 30-win seasons for the first time since 1992-96 and consecutive winning Valley records for the first time since 1986-87.

COLE COOK, SR., SP, BRADLEY, 3.51, COMMUNICATIONS (SPORTS COMM)
Cook appeared in 19 games in 2019, ranking among the national ERA leaders most of the season, and his 2.03 earned run average wound up the second-best by any Bradley pitcher with at least 1.0 innings pitched per game in the metal bat era (since 1974).  He posted a 5-2 record with a .220 opponent batting average in his 62.0 innings pitched in 2019.

A 3-year player at Bradley after transferring from Illinois Central College, Cook ended his career with a 17-13 record and a 4.02 ERA in 53 career appearances, 28 as a starter and 25 from the bullpen.  An All-MVC honorable mention starting pitcher in 2018, Cook also collected numerous academic awards: MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in 2019; MVC Honor Rollin 2017 and 2018; and the Bradley Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his six semesters at Bradley.

ANDY SHADID, SR., OF, BRADLEY, 3.51, MASTER'S OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
After graduating with his bachelor's degree in finance in 2018 after just three years, Shadid returned to Bradley for his senior year to pursue his master's degree in business administration. A Senior CLASS Award Candidate in 2019 and the Bradley Athletics spring recipient of the State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award, Shadid earned All-MVC second team this season after collecting honorable mention in 2017 and 2018.  Twice named the MVC Player of the Week and to the Collegiate Baseball national Players of the Week during the 2019 season, Shadid led the Braves with 43 RBI this year.

LUKE SHADID, JR., SS, BRADLEY, 3.66, BUSINESS (FINANCE)
Following a similar academic path as older brother, Andy, Luke Shadid graduated in three years, receiving his bachelor's degree in business May 19.  A repeat selection to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team, Shadid was a second-team All-MVC choice this season for his play in the field. Batting leadoff as the starting shortstop all season, Shadid led the 2019 Braves with a .344 average and 49 runs scored, shared the team lead with 12 doubles and was second with 10 home runs and 42 RBI.  His 1.62 runs produced per game leads The Valley.

Shadid has started all 141 games he has played in his 3-year Bradley career, including every game of the 2017 and 2019 seasons at shortstop.  In the classroom, he qualified for the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in 2018, as well as the MVC Honor Roll in 2017 and 2018 and the Bradley Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his first six semesters.
