Game Recap: Volleyball |
DALLAS, Texas – Sophomore Rachel Pranger paced Bradley offensively for the second consecutive match, finishing with a team-best nine kills and Dallas, Texas, native Maggie Revell matched a career-high with eight kills, but Bradley Volleyball suffered a 25-17, 27-25, 25-20 setback to Stephen F. Austin Friday afternoon at the Doubletree Invitational.

Revell notched six of her eight kills in the tightly contested second set and was one of six Braves to record five or more kills in the contest.  Stephen F. Austin hit .318 as a team, however, and improved to 2-0 on the young season with the victory.

In the opening set, SFA took control with a 4-0 run to build a 16-9 advantage.  Bradley (0-2 overall) fought back to within four on a couple of occasions with the last at 20-16, before the Ladyjacks were able to pull away.  Corin Evans had a pair of kills during a 4-0 Stephen F. Austin spurt which game her squad set point at 24-17 and SFA went on to take the frame 25-17.

The second set featured 14 ties and four lead changes as Bradley made a late push to extend the set.  Trailing by as many as four points (17-13), the Braves whittled away at the SFA advantage to eventually pull even (22-22) on a Karagan Coggin block.  The teams would trade points on the next six serves as Bradley fought off a pair of set points to extend the set.  SFA's Xariah Williams broke a 25-25 tie with a kill and Evans put the finishing touches on a 27-25 set win for the Ladyjacks with a kill of her own.

Revell had six of her eight kills on just seven swings in the second set to help lead Bradley.  Sophomore Hannah Thompson added 12 of her match-high 22 digs in the frame.

Stephen F. Austin hit .340 in the third and final set, closing out the contest with a 25-20 victory.  The Braves stayed within striking distance most of the set and trailed 20-17 after a Thompson kill.  Back-to-back SFA points pushed the deficit to 22-17 and the Ladyjacks would later hold match point at 24-19.  Sophomore Lida Kastanou, who had five kills on 10 swings in the third set, trimmed the margin to four (24-20) with her final kill of the night, but a Bradley block error gave Stephen F. Austin the 25-20 win.

Bradley closes out action at the SMU Doubletree Invitational Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against UT-San Antonio.
