Game Recap: Volleyball |
CHICAGO, Ill. – Freshman Raeann Bergman had a season-best 12 kills and Bradley received double-doubles from both sophomore Hannah Thompson and senior Hannah Angeli, but tournament-host Illinois-Chicago was able to hold off the Braves for a 25-19, 25-27, 25-15, 25-22 victory Friday night during the opening day of the UIC Invitational.

Bergman helped highlight Bradley's 27-25 second-set victory with six kills on just eight swings and collected all 12 of her kills in the final three sets.  Thompson posted her fifth consecutive double-double, finishing with a match-high 14 kills to go with her 14 digs, while Angeli notched her second double-double of the season with 26 assists and 11 digs.  Sophomore Kat Poore collected a career-high 20 digs to help lead the Bradley defensive efforts.

UIC (7-1 overall) used a 6-1 spurt midway through the first set to push what was a 13-11 lead to 19-12.  The Flames would go on to take the opener 25-19 with four different UIC players tallying four kills in the first stanza.

Bergman did not play in the first set, but started the second set for the Braves and would find the floor with six kills to help highlight a 27-25 win for the Braves.  Bradley never trailed in the frame, leading by as many as seven at 21-14 before having to hold off a late UIC push.  The Flames chipped away at the Bradley lead and eventually pulled even at 24-24.  Bergman broke the tie with a kill, only to have UIC answer to knot the score for a third time at 25-25.  Back-to-back Bergman kills closed out a 27-25 Bradley win as the Braves pulled even in the match with the victory.

In the third set, UIC raced out to an early 6-2 advantage and the Flames used an 8-1 run midway through the contest to extend the lead to 10 at 19-9.  UIC went on to claim the third set 25-15 behind five kills on five attacks from Michelle Glover.

Bradley looked to force a fifth and deciding set after rallying from as many as seven down to take a 20-18 lead.  UIC led 14-7 after a Bradley error, before the Braves rallied.  Bergman had three kills and a block during a 6-1 BU spurt which cut the deficit to 15-13.  Thompson would later snap an 18-18 tie with consecutive kills of her own to give Bradley a 20-18 edge.

UIC would answer, however, with a 5-0 run which included a kill and pair of blocks from Glover to take a 23-20 lead.  Thompson, who had seven fourth-set kills, stopped the Flames' run with her 14th kill of the night, only to have the Flames respond with a block as UIC held match point at 24-21.  Bradley kept their hopes alive with a Maggie Revell kill, but UIC's Brookah Palmer found the floor with a kill to give the Flames the fourth set 25-22.

Bradley continues play at the UIC Invitational Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Sacramento State, before closing out tournament play later that afternoon with a 4 p.m. contest vs. Murray State.
